hi there, i am just wondering if anyone knows what the story would be.

I am on BTEA at the moment, and hoping to go to africa to volunteer in an orphanage for 3-4 weeks in the summer. I am raising funds myself through events and sponserships.

I am in my 2nd year in college (28 year old mature student) and the work i'll be doing in africa would be really beneficial to my course and my future career (whether the social welfare care bout that now is a different story, haha)

Does anyone know how this would work before I ask them? has anyone done this before?? Will I be cut off the social welfare and have to reapply?

    thanks in advance!!! :)

Do you not sign off btea during the summer months and revert back to jsa/jsb

yea i did last year (in august). but they didnt let me know that till august and cut me off. told me i wasnt meant to have been receiving payments (of BTEA) since i finished my exams. they only put me back on the BTEA in november then! but either btea or jobseekers, what would happen?

The only way you could remain on BTEA while volunteering abroad would be if such a work placement or work experience was a requirement of your course and essential for your degree and the college gave you a letter stating that was the case.

You can only claim jobseekers if you are in the country and available/looking for work.
