As a matter of interest on chit chat about wild animals, how many farmers on here process a firearm, I for one have two shotguns and a .22 rifle all used for game and lamping

Shotgun, HMR, and .223. All come in useful for vermin and varmints, just need to put two legged ones on the license !

Not questioning your decision, but in general what opinions do farmers have of gun clubs etc. Do you generally not mind responsible members of gun clubs shooting your lands?

Shotgun and a .22lr here, mostly for pheasant, rabbits and general vermin control.

Rare 16 bore shotgun from about 1900 which still fires - cartridges are hard got for it these days. Rumour is that it was stolen from the local landlord's house. It was found by my grandfather in the thatch of an old house as they were reroofing it with slate.

12 bore remington shotgun that a next door neighbour brought home from America wrapped in brown paper and stored in the overhead compartment on the plane in the 1950's and just licensed here when he got back.

Patrick (Paddy) Carley & John Lambert, both in Wexford would be worth a shout. You can have ammunition delivered by secure courier. Scan front and back of your license and pay with CC, don't have to leave the house!

There's another lad, Paul O Halloran I think in Drangan in Tipp could be worth asking too.

Friend of mine now bought a Remington pump action new for only a few hundred euros. Surprised how cheap it was.

Have an auld double barrel. Side by side here that is about 100 yrs old. Beautiful piece.

shotgun and rifle here biggest downfall now is 2x80 euro every 3 yrs with this new licence dont really get enough use to justify 160,that reminds me may pay that today

.17hmr here, got it just before Christmas and never really got much time firing her yet

It's cheaper than the yearly licensing that came before. With the exception of lads who had a lot of shotguns.

I've no use for a gun.

HMR and a side by side here . The €80 each license bugs me aswell , I think the old ones were only 7 and 12 each per year .
Mostly magpies , grey crows and foxes I shoot but I havent made time for any shooting in the last year or more .

From memory the vermin licence was IR£5 for a shotgun but of course that did not allow you to use the gun off your farm.

€25 for first shotgun, €6 for subsequent shotguns, €40 for rifle if I remember right. The new one is cheaper spread over 3 years.

Was it cheaper for farming and a bit dearer for game though ?

There was a limited and an unlimited gun license, which AFAICR was that on the limited license you could ONLY shoot on your own land, no one elses even with permission. The unlimited license allowed you shoot on any land you had permission on.

The limited license used to be only £3, it was usual to put the second shotgun down as this, vermin etc. on your own land only.

Have an O/U, a pump and a 223 Remington Tikka

Deffo prefer shooting mags and greys over pheasant or woodcock any day

Two shot guns O/U and a semi auto a .17 hmr and a 22 pcp air rifle all mainly used for vermin would be worse than the wife for buying shoes only for the licences and the cost of them stops me buying a gun that takes my fancy every time i am in a gun shop...

Hunting with Dad since I can remember, first licence at 16,nowadays time is scarce but I still control mags and grey crows,Larsen traps used also,it helps the song bird population greatly, not as many foxes shot here as there used to be but I am called upon by neighbours to shoot problem foxes regularly.Deer on my land also as plenty of woods about.big work involved preparing them when trigger is pulled but I hate and have reported people lamping them illegally.
I've 5 to licence here all kept in mass concrete vault.
