Timber frame company

Am currently undertaking a self build. Have been on Boards.ie a lot over the last few months reading up on info and its been invaluable. It's now time to come to a decision on our construction method and my heart is broken.

Our engineer said if he was building 'it would be large cavity block built and pumped insulation with hollowcore slab'. Our project manager is all for timber frame.

Ourselves we're leaning toward timber frame and have narrowed it down to 2 companies - Munster Timber Supplies (MTS) and Keenan Timber Frame (KTF). I know you probably can't say anything about either company on here but if any one could send me a quick PM with info on either (good or bad) I'd really appreciate it. We need to make a decision in the next week and seeing as it's our life savings and our life home we want to make it a good one. Thanks

We have the same opinions, architect favours timber frame, engineer favour wide cavity. Still haven't decided despite all the posts on the merits of each. We had quotes and visited factories and houses by a number of TF companies. Never heard of the two you mention and cannot find anything online for MTS is it definitely Supplies?

Sorry its Munster timber structures. Who are you looking at? I like the speed of construction and the warmth of timber frame. I also think it gives us a better chance of getting a well insulated air tight house than block built given that we're self building. With self building block I feel that things could be missed. One thing I'm not sure of with timber frame is the noise travelling between the floors!

Well, the engineer isn't paying for it, and isn't going to live in, nor pay for it. You are correct about the insulation properties and airtightness. Easier and more subjectively measurable than a site-built house.

The noise between floors is a non-issue: this is a feature of poorly built and poorly detailed floors - it is not because it's TF.

Look at it this way - we've built masonry houses with timber joists and floors for 100+years with no issue - so why now ? - quality of work, and types of finishes selected tbh.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
