Hi , I want to buy a decent electric guitar . I will only need it to play rhythm guitar. ( Not much of a lead player)
So I need something with a sweet tone.
Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated. A link to the suggested guitar(s) would be cool aswell.
    Thanks

A good semi acoustic might be a good option. Possibly with a magnetic pickup along with a piazo

As for a particular one I like the top end Yamaha guitars. They're good value for money. However that is a very personal thing and what I like you might hate so it's best to try lots and see what you like.

Thanks for the input topcatcbr, but I have a really good Martin semi acoustic.

Does anyone have any advice about PRS guitars?
What ones to buy and what I should stay away from?

    Thanks

What's your budget? I believe the cheap prs's the SE series, made on korea are a top class guitar. I also believe PRS's are for PRS fans as they are quite distinct.

its all down to budget if the budget is good the a les paul you cant go wrong with the tone

Yeah if you're in US PRS territory i'd get a nice les paul. At that price i wouid never buy without being in the shop and trying a few.

OP, try giving a little more information regarding the features and price range you are interested in.

This is a dialogue. You must contribute as well.

Yes , I do know that. But I am busy. Cant be on internet all of the time.
I suppose id might scrape a grand for a new guitar. I would want a hard case with that though.
I am looking for something new , but ive had Gibsons and Fenders , so I would like to try something different maybe.
Doesn't need to have loads of buttons or features (whammy bar etc.), just something that sounds sweet and is a great guitar for playing mostly rhythm.

Didn't mean to offend anyone. But Ravelleman more or less suggested that I should be replying to comments straight away. That's all.
    No malice intended.

Just so you all know that it was not my intention to offend anyone. It was aimed at Ravelleman, as he said I should reply to comments. I just meant that I couldn't reply to comments as soon as they came in.
If I insulted you, I didn't mean to.

    Sorry

No, I didn't. I said that you should give more information in your posts about what you want.

This is the kind of information that should go in the first post of your thread. It allows people to offer suggestions.

not usually a sig guitar fan but i've heard great things about the prs se tremonti

Otherwise, second hand is where you'll get best value, adverts teaming with bargains! and some nice eclectic guitars too!

don't know where you are but get into the music shops and play everything you can, something will feel right to you in your hands hopefully!

usually they are more marketing than quality and can be a little more expensive than the guitar from which they are based on....there are many exceptions of course inc the pat smear!! it's a beaut...it's a superstrat SG hybrid!

    Hi
Ash.J.Williams. I had a look at the Pat Smear sig Hagstrom.
Its a lovely guitar alright, but the black colour doesnt really do it for me.

This thread is kind of like "what trainers should I buy"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭**Vai**

OP if you're not sure on a type/brand, take a look on adverts. See whats in your price range and read some reviews on anything you like the look of. Im sure the folks here would be more than happy to give you any experiences they have on whatever you choose.

The Fame Forum line of guitars on MusicStore.de are great, I've got their Forum III model. Great tone and sustain, really great necks on them too. They're built by the same guys who build Mayones guitars!

In my opinion you get the most bang for your buck with ibanez. Something like rg1527 would be a good option. But you should know that a cheap guitar in combination with a good amp gives better results then a great guitar with a cheap 15w combo, so keep that in mind when budgeting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 559 ✭✭✭Joe Doe

Agree with Mark019, an ibanez is the best (as in most versatile) machine out there, I've had twangy fenders, weightly gibsons/epihpones and the Ibanez (RG series) is the most versatile due to HSH, fast necks, locking tuners, fine tuners, lightweight, floating trems etc. The cheap ones are decent too RG270, mid range have solid reviews RG550 and the top range customes/teamcrafts with Evolutions etc, will empty any wallet.

I would agree with Ibanez in general as I'm a fan of their stuff, however, the thread states not really for lead work etc...
Forget about all that locking tuner bs. If you're not hanging off the tremelo you won't need it and it'll cause more grief than anything in the end as they're a pain to set up and drop tune etc. If you don't need one, don't get one.

If going Ibanez or not I'd suggest something with a fixed bridge.

Thanks very much KeithTS. I will buy a guitar with a fixed bridge as I wont be playing any lead.
Just have to decide on what.
I want to stay away from Gibson , as I have a Les Paul Robot and Im not mad keen on Fender for some reason.
Any suggestions or reviews would be great.
    Budget is 800 to 1000. :confused::confused:

    What's wrong with locking tuners?

Noubt wrong with locking tuners, I have them on most of my guitars.
However, if you're not playing lead you don't need a floating bridge, if you don't have a floating bridge locking tuners are generally overkill.

If you aren't using a floating trem they're a pain, tricky to drop tune and go and if you break a string and so on so it's best to stay away from them if you don't need it is the point I was trying to make.

    To the question initially asked:
As far as what guitar to buy, what kind of thing are you looking to play?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,437 ✭✭✭✭Ash.J.Williams

are we talking locking tuners or a locking system? because i doubt it matters what trem you are using to have locking tuners? and i would imagine locking tuners are ideal for down tuning.

(see ESP Ltd Ec 1000 for locking tuners)

He seems to be talking about a locking nut.

Locking tuners just make restringing easier. Restringing requires less winds so the strings are less likely to slip. Tuning therefore improves.

My G&L Comanche had locking tuners and they worked just as well as any others for drop tuning.

    Yeah you're right.
I misunderstood what was going on there, my bad.

Locking Tuners are good, locking nuts are bad! Cheers for the clarification.
