I think I have a problem with my spelling and recently i'v looked at words and read them completely wrong.

I'v been getting words mixed up and when i initially see a particular word I confuse it for another one..

I'm 21 now and obviously went through secondary school ect.. So is it worth getting a diagnosis on this? and if yes then how do I go about it?

Writing letters and even typing has annoyed me a lot lately when I see all the spelling mistakes i'v made..Thinking back in school, I could never learn another language because I struggled to pronounce the most basic words...

You can get in touch with the DAI.

That's the national dyslexia association, they arrange for you to be assessed and diagnosed. You'd have to google them for contact details.

The Dyslexia Association of Ireland should have all the info you need here: http://www.dyslexia.ie/

The site isn't great in terms of content, but it does provide a phone number and contact details. Give them a call, and they should be able to provide you with information as to how to get tested in your locality.

What would it mean if I was told I am dyslexic?

I have intentions of joining the gardai in the next few years. You need 2 languages Irish and English would that mean i'd be exempt or wouldnt be able to apply?

As far as I know, dyslexia won't prevent you form joining the police force.

Boards.ie does have a Garda Recruitment forum - you may want to post there for more specific information.

Hi OP - you're first step should be to go talk to your GP.
Just to rule anything else out, while you may have dyslexia your GP may want to run some tests for other things especially if this is something you have only just noticed.

Funny, my school never picked up on it. I suppose that could be because I always had a good vocab..

I'll actually ring them now and see what they say.

I made it to second year of university before my dyslexia was diagnosed. I was told by my educational psychologist that its normal to start over compensating, and often if you get through primary school without anyone picking up on a learning disorder there's not much chance it'll be noticed at secondary level. There's also a lot of misconceptions about what dyslexia is, even amongst teachers, so the symptoms aren't always recognised.

Even if you're not in full time education I think its worth getting tested, it definitely helped my self-esteem; I always thought I was stupid and I was constantly being told I was lazy, so it was nice to find out that's not the case.

OP don't be self-diagnosing off the internet first thing. As Taltos advised - make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible and get a proper diagnosis. There's an awful difference between dyslexia and just piss poor concentration.

I was diagnosed with severe dyslexia when I was seven, that's over 30 years ago, and even nowadays I sometimes struggle with comprehension and my ability to express myself clearly. Over the years I've developed tricks so it's not so obvious, but first I would advise that you see your GP rather than self diagnosing, and s/he would be able to advise you from there.

I never thought this would be a GP issue... I'm sure he'll just refer me anyway.. I think I might be better off getting a test done by the dyslexia association.
