Hi. Im just wondering does anyone have an idea how serious it is if you are arrested on spot for bench warrents outstanding. Someone I know was pulled over for speeding and the guards put her name through the system. She had numerous bench warrants for fines over the years and they arrested her on the spot and put her in a cell for 8 hours. This is my daughter and I am worried she is not telling me the full story. Is this standard procedure to be arrested on the spot for unpaid speeding fines would there be something she isnt telling me. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. She was eventually brought to court, same day.

I'd say that would sound typical behaviour for outstanding bench warrants? The way I understand it is that 1. You're caught speeding for e.g 2. You're issued a fine 3. You don't pay it 4. You're issued a summons to court 5. You don't show up 6. A judge issues what is called a bench warrant for your arrest.
If she has even one of these such warrants, I think she would be detained. It wouldn't necessarily be for anything worse, though of course, she could have been detained for any number of reasons!

That's why Cops have computers in their cars, to arrest the guilty. Have you not heard of the combined checkpoints that are in operation for several months. Customs, Gardai, Social Welfare inspectors, and god knows what else.

A Bench Warrant is a warrant issued for the arrest of a person who has failed to answer bail and appear in Court, i.e. someone who was charged in a Garda Station and given bail to appear in Court later. In certain cases a judge can also issue a bench warrant for someone who has failed to turn up on a summons, this would usually only happen in a serious case, like Drink Driving, Drugs or theft.
Penal Warrants are issued if a fine imposed in Court is unpaid. The person is taken directly to prison.
