if it's not already in a 3:2 ratio, you will have to change this; there's no way around it. crop using canvas size would be one option; but you either lose info or stretch the photo.

When you make an image 6ins tall and 4 ins wide is it normal the rule of thirds grid is taller than it is wider or should it be even regardless of how the image is

File > New and then put your 6 x 4 dimensions in there. Then, on the existing image, go ctrl+a to select all, ctrl+c to copy, and then ctrl+v on the new image to paste. You can move it around and resize it in the new frame, and it will automatically crop off the extra bits that go over the edges.

Did you crop the original photo from the camera? usually that comes out at a 3x 2 ratio which easily crops to 6 x 4. Did you crop the photo without looking at the aspect ratio. Have you got the original photo and start again?

    Sorry made mstake
The original is 22.667 ins wide and 15 ins wide. But the guy is in the middle. i want him a bit to the left, top left of rule of thirds, but i will have to make it 6 ins high and 4 wide to do that. Or is there a better way to do that? Thanks

I have an original on the computer and am working on a copy of the original

Ctrl+t will let you resize it. Hold down shift and drag the corners. Photoshop 7 is very old but I imagine those short cuts haven't changed.

I'd suggest looking up some photoshop tutorials on youtube, this is very basic stuff.

Example>>>>Just to show how to resize and crop, this is 1 of many ways.
