I started watching from season 1 again and bit confused about "The walkers" in the 1st episode they seem to have a memory, sentimental attachments and common sense. We see the girl pick you the teddy bear, the wife who returns to the house where her family are where she tries to open the door by the handle. In the city the walkers can run and crawl!

Did I miss something along the way.I'm at season 4 now but don't remember them being as advanced if you get what I mean?

Unless I'm thinking of a different programme, they were able to chase at a fair trot.

It's an idea they seemed to have abandoned. They were, initially, going the route of Romero's Dawn of the Dead, wherein the zombies maintained, not memories, but habits from their old lives. This worked for DotD because it was a social commentary (people are zombies who drift aimlessly through large shopping malls because capitalist society has made them braindead) and was interesting in early episodes of TWD where they explored the same. But, long-term, it would have been an unsustainable plot device when the real analysis of the show is how the people adapt to a world after order has been lost. Iirc, zombies are also seen climbing a fence and one is seen using a tool of some sort (hammer or something to try smash a window) in the first ep.

Yeah, I noticed this myself on a rewatch.

There are quite a few inconsistencies throughout the show actually, in a recent episode we suddenly saw zombies attracted to fire, and in another we saw Michonne walking with a new set of armless/jawless zombies who didnt have to "give up" trying to get to her.
