Possible Discrepancy on car mileage

Hi,so I bought a vehicle for work last November. After a few months driving it I decided to use cartell to check it out (something in hindsight I should of done before purchasing it).
And low and behold it came back with a "Possible discrepancy" on its mileage. What Im wondering is how reliable their info is and where they get it from.Having read into it all I can gather is they rely on their mileage information coming from people like myself making inquiries. In effect they're charging €20 for people to update their databases for them. They even state...

"A possible discrepancy does not mean a car is clocked. If you find a possible discrepancy, contact our Customer Care Team. A discrepancy means that we have readings on the National Mileage Register that are inconsistent with the mileage you have entered. All of the mileage information on the NMR is supplied by third parties in good faith and cannot be validated"

To me that in effect says their information isnt reliable. Can anyone shine any light on how they operate and if they,or anyone, can actually provide correct mileage information to the public. You can see my concern but I cant take their information as fact given the statement above.thanks

Any car that is laid up or stored or sitting on a garage yard for a few months will have this discrepancy as the figures they have are used to calculate an average yearly mileage and if your car does not fit into that then it comes back as "possible discrepancy". Cars with unusually high or low mileage will also show up because the system can't take vicars wife or sales rep into its equations.

Contact previous owners and ask them what the mileage was when they sold the vehicle.

Thanks mate.Bought it off a garage in Dublin.Said it was a friend of his he was selling it for.He got it as a payoff when he lost his job.Company car and company went under kind of deal so that might explain the discrepancy given dealer told it had been sat up a few months.Problem is if I ever do go to sell it,it will look like Iv been messing with it now.Thought cartell were a reliable source of information for this kind of thing.Another little snippet from their Q&A section reads "So if the NMR says no discrepancy then does this mean the vehicle is definitely not clocked?
    No......"

They give a more detailed answer but thats how it starts. No need to elaborate after that.So even if they say theres nothing wrong theyre saying there that its not reliable either way.I find that a tad alarming as,like I say above, that will paint me in a bad light should I try to sell on the vehicle down the road and the potential buyer uses cartell.

sites like that only give an indication or possible answer but there may be several or different answers more suitable which are left out, It is basically just a forecast/quesswork. There are sites in UK which can tell if there is HP or finance owed on vehicles and I would consider those more important than something like cartell.

    Ask yourself a few questions,

Are you happy with the vehicle, does id tick all/most of the boxes?
Was it over/under priced? (too much of a bargain can indicate a dud/troublesome vehicle being dumped)
Does the interior fit with the mileage? (if high miles then driver seat should be worn a lot more than passenger seats.)

You can also check under the carpets and in the boot/cargo area around the doors for collision damage etc and have a good mechanic look it over(and under) and ask her/him if the vehicle looks "right".

IF a second hand car smells of buckets of air freshners and has two on the go in the vents then walk away as it could well be a flood recovered vehicle that has lain in contaminated floodwater for days.

in general I am happy with it,and didnt think was any problem with it at all in truth,I wasnt fully aware of what cartell was and only checked after a conversation with a mate about it.Was surprised by the results they threw up with mileage as genuinely didnt think anything was wrong, used it more out of curiosity than anything.

Is there a service record for the car or any indication of where it was serviced? NCT also keeps a record of the odometer.

I owned a car once that was clocked after I sold it to a dealer. The dealer didn't bother removing the "next service due" sticker which the buyer then copped. I was able to set him straight as to what the milage was.

Would you like me to move this thread to the Motors forum? I think you'll get better advice there.
