Second Gown for the Evening

Is this the done thing anymore? Having a second, possibly more comfortable dress for late in the evening?

I found what looks quite similar to my wedding dress online only it's knee length.. (Chinese site) and I'm thinking of getting it..

My wedding dress is beautiful but it's quite bottom heavy :o big long train to be hiked up at the back for afters.. I'm thinking I might just sneak away and put on my little mini version at around 11pm or so.. at that stage everyone will have seen my main gown.. also means I don't have to worry about my real dress having drink spilled on it etc when the guests are nice and tipsy.. and I'll be able to dance a lot easier, not to mention feel a little fresher..

Opinions? Anyone else do this? or am I nuts? :pac:

I have never been at a wedding where the bride changed out of her actual dress but its your wedding so you do what you want !!! Who cares what is or isn't 'done anymore'

I think it's a brilliant idea! I purposely went for a dress that I could wear for the dancing, as it always bugs me seeing brides so uncomfortable trying to carry around their dresses for the dancing and everybody tripping over it! Go for it, as you say everyone will have seen your big gown by then, and you want to be able to enjoy the dancing to the max!

I did this - I ended up wearing a tea length white dress for the daytime and something slightly sexier for the evening - http://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Biba+Cowl+back+maxi+dress/161279516,default,pd.html

I would say do what you want. I will not lie, I loved getting the extra complements!

I've seen this happen at weddings before, once even the bride changed into a red dress. Nobody really cared.

In my opinion, I don't really see the point in changing into another dress at that stage. By then you would have spent approx 11 or twelve hours in the dress, you would have sweat, tan marks, perfume scent, grass stains, maybe survived the dinner and drinks reception unscathed.

I can understand you wanting to be comfortable in your dress but again you will be in your dress for long enough that day I would imagine your dress is comfortable enough. If not, then you probably should have considered that when you were choosing your dress. Without knowing how long away your wedding is or what your dress looks like, is there any way your dress can be altered so that the train can be detached, relieving a bit of the weight of the dress for you?

I couldn't do this, and find it a bit strange most of the time tbh. Why not just pick a dress in the first place that's comfortable?? Spending so much on it and loving it so much I couldn't imagine taking it off when I didn't have to, I stared at mine for about 10 mins at 5am before I finally took it off. I purposely picked a light dress that was easy to move, walk, dance (and pee!) in. Not much use now if your dress is already bought. I'd be disappointed to see a bride change out of her dress, I love the dresses.

Do whatever you are happy with.
I just got a comfortable dress to wear the whole day but I also had 2 small children and a 4 week old baby so the options of anything too spectacular were out!

I have been at a wedding where the bride did this. Nothing wrong with it but it wouldn't be my thing. My priority was to get a dress I liked and felt comfortable in. Even though my dress was heavy on the hanger, it was well supported on me so it didn't feel heavy. Wore it from midday til 4.30 am without bother :-) However, as with all other wedding things, do what suits you!!

when i saw my dress i knew it was the one,

it was comfortable to wear too, but it was your typical big wedding dress

about the month before the wedding i was looking for shoes and happened to pass the monsoon bridal department, and i saw dress no 2 and i loved it, (it wasn't appropriate for the church though as it was low cut) so i bought it to wear for the afters.

so i wore the 'big' dress for the church, photo's and meal, and after the meal and after greeting the people coming in for the afters, when we went upstairs for a breather i changed into my 'party' dress, it was much easier to move in, and i felt much better after freshening up and putting on a clean beautiful white dress again made me feel clean again, (the big one had foot prints on the train and dirt around the bottom from where we took the photo's in the garden )

That's pretty much why I want a second dress... The big one is gorgeous and I love it dearly but it's just not practical for dancing in.. and I want the best of both worlds :p

Thanks for the replies folks :) I went and ordered it.

I was at a wedding in Hungary a few years ago. The tradition there is to change into a red dress after midnight!

Personally after spending so much money on buying and altering the dress I wanted to spend as much time in it as possible. I wouldn't dream of changing out of it, and then it's romantic to have your husband help you with all the buttons and what-not at the end of the night.
I did have a lovely white dress from monsoon though that I wore to breakfast the next day and would've worn it that evening, if I hadn't already bought a dress for that occasion.

I think do what suits your own situation. If you have an uncomfortable and heavy wedding dress, it may feel a relief to get it off.

I changed into a short dress for dancin'. Twas great! I was able to fly about. I know people do things with hooking up the length of long dresses, but that didn't suit my dress.

Long one would have been too warm anyway. We were outside for most of our wedding day, but the jusic was indoors and it was roasting.

It's something I never thought of. I'd ideally like to stay in my dress for the duration, I might source a nice back up anyway though- I like Gatica's idea, that if I ended up wearing my original dress I can still use the second one for breakfast.

tis a good idea if you are going for a fairly full dress I would think. And a change also as it is a very long day and you are in the one outfit for the entire day and night..
