Why Are Carverys Always serving Cold Food?

    Everytime i go for a Carvery in any place the Vegetables , meat, Potatoes are only luke warm getting fed up with these places ,

    Can anybody recommend somewhere ?

    I think its time to Name and Shame these establishments,

    Are you willing to trek the length & breadth of the country for a decent carvery, or would you like to tell us in what area you want to find a decent carvery?

    The Yacht in Clontarf does a lovely carvery.

    I had carvery only yesterday in Kettle's Country House in north Co. Dublin and it was all piping hot, as always.

    Unless you have tried every carvery in Ireland, then you can't say they are all crap. I have never had a bad carvery at The Yacht. The veg is al dente, meat/ fish has been succulent and they do a gorgeous potato dauphinoise. I have definitely had some rubbish carverys, but there are decent places out there too.

    I don't know that I've had cold food in a carvery, bad food yes (deep fried frozen 'roast' potatoes I'm looking at you) but not cold food . I kind of enjoy the badness of it though.

    If I wanted a carvery style Sunday lunch in Dublin (and I'd known by Friday I'd want it so as to book it in time) I'd go to the Exchequer and get a roast. They deliver the joint of meat or chicken you've ordered to your table along with bowls of roasties, sausage stuffing, veg, mash and all-you-can-eat-gravy and you serve yourself. Service can be very hit and miss though, you'd miss your cheery 'All the veg?' carvery man!

    Sinnotts in St Stephens green is always fresh and warm, beef and peppercorn sauce is great

    To be honest, requests like this do much better in the regional forums because we may not have many posters from your area here in in Food & Drink.

    If I were you I'd post a thread in the Dublin City forum, or South County Dublin if that's the area you're interested in. You'd be much more likely to get helpful replies.

    Have you ever worked in a restaraunt kitchen? veg is blanched in the morning, potatoes par boiled, meat prepped, sauces and soups made, ever ask yourself how that pork belly comes out perfect 15 minutes after ordering it when a minimum of 120 minutes required to break down the fats. Lot goes on in a kitchen. no different to a carvery, food prep, food storage, heating without drying.

    A busy carvery has kitchen continuously on the go, if you go into a not very busy pub late in the afternoon and the veg has been sitting there for 3 hours then sure, but a busy carvery will have turnover of fresh food or rather "not dried out"

    theres also a difference between a mass produced meat,veg, gravy for 10 euro where you get to pick what goes on the plate, from the quantities of veg to the cut of meat from several different joints depending on whats on that day, with no delay, and compare that then to a sit down restaraunt meal. "It is what it is" kind of thing. Incomparable. You can like or prefer 1 without affecting your preference for the other.

    I'm sorry but nothing you can say will change my mind over carvery food. There is a difference between prepped food and cooked food sitting there waiting under a lamp. If I go out to eat, I want to sit down and be served; not queuing up with my chipped/dirty tray to eat stale food for roughly the same price...

    ...but youre comparing 2 different things. like saying why go for a macdonalds when you could be eating at l'ecrivian. They dont occupy the same culinary sphere when discussing where to go for something to eat.

    And the food is not stale unless you get to a carvery later in the day at which time there has be some expectancy of what you're getting. Ive eaten many a carvery in manys a pub and gotten quality food, great cghunks of meat, heaps of mash and veg gravy, for a tenner. would you get that in a sitdown restaraunt? no. But then again, theyre not the same thing.

    I love restaurants, with the lovely service and the vast menu choices. Sometimes a good carvery just hits the spot though - say if you're out on a Sunday afternoon for a drive and just want to be fed a good dinner for €10 - €12, no waiting and no frills :)

    I was there only recently. Great food and service. I'd nearly have gone for second servings. Everything was perfect!!!
