Is it really dangerous to re-freeze food

So I realised i left the freezer door open all night - most of the stuff is half thawed.

I read somewhere once that you'll die if you refreeze thawed food.

I think that sounds like a load of auld cod so I'm taking my chances - just closed the door and I'm done with it.

This is a very good question OP. Only AH can solve these burning issues.

I know it is ok to thaw meat, cook it and refreeze it. (Never killed me)
But ice cream and chicken nuggets and all the other important things.....not sure!

Eat the refrozen fish and chicken first.
    You can thank me later.

I'd probably leave it thaw fully first, then heat it up slightly above room temperature for about 8 hours. Then re freeze it again... good as new...

A couple of antibiotics then every 3 Days for 5 weeks. Don't finish the full course tho.

O and another tip, if your phone battery is low, put it in the microwave for a few minutes.

It's fine. Freezers are only there cos big corporations wanted you to buy one to keep up with the joneses.

Luke warm food in a press is all I ever eat and I'm fine.

    Only applies to pork.

    Never eat frozen rice reheated.

No harm as long as rice is quickly chilled/frozen after boiling, defrosted in the fridge, then heated throughly.

I do this most weeks, and am still alive.

If you are asking, can bacteria multiply, spores germinate to greater numbers & potentially not be killed based on the cooking condition of the food when thawed.

    Then yes

    Yes yes definitely YES
unless and I cannot stress this enough
    you
Take it our of your mouth BEFORE you refreeze it.

Apparently this also applies to reheating it in the microwave.
Overriding the safety switches on microwave doors should be left to a professional, so I haven't been able to verify the authenticity of this fact.

You have an increased risk of suffering food poisoning but you should be ok. Even though it was partly thawed the temperature of the food will still have been fairly low so potential bacteria growth will be relatively slow.

Eat the re-frozen food OP - In the interests of science like.

Then let us know if you do die so we can learn from your research.

Do refreeze the food, you'll need it when the electricity bill comes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

Refreezing damages the cell structure of the food. This is from ice crystals forming during freezing.
It'll damage the taste severely and texture of the food. But, so long as the food was defrosted (above 5c) for a cumulative total of less than 4-5 hours it should be safe. Any longer than that and you risk food poisoning.

P.S. Apologies for giving a serious answer in AH. I have no shame.

If it's ice cream you should eat it right away, because ice cream is nice.
