Just wondering but in the past month or 2 I've had too incidents in Cork City (Ballyphehane and Togher) where teenagers have been hanging around on the side of the road and then walk across in front of cars for no reason.

The first time happened to me. Thankfully, I had a bit of time and slowed down fairly easily before I could have hit him. The 2nd time it happened to a driver coming against me on the Pouladuff Road.

Is this some sort of stupid new game that's being played. It certainly looked to me that the teenagers were waiting till a car came near and just plain walk out in front of the car. Absolutely crazy stuff. Considering all this necknomination stuff that's been going on I wouldn't put anything past the youth of today.

Considering that in Ireland driver is always at fault in "car-pedestrian" accidents, it's no wonder that kind of games are played.

Happened to me just last week down towards UCC. Some ass ran out into the road. I managed to come to a stop. He ran around the back and kicked the car and ran off again.

By the time I had realized what was going on and was out of the car I was just parked in the middle of the road and the jackass was too far away already.

I've seen something similar in Dundalk. It's not a game as such, just a hard-man thing when you're with a group of your scumbag mates. Have a quick, unnoticeable glance up the road to look at oncoming traffic and then saunter across the road as if you don't care and hadn't noticed any cars.

I see groups of wee pr**ks do this all the time, strolling across a 60kph road diagonally as slow as possible.

Had a fella run across the road in front of me last week, had to slam on enough for ABS to kick in. Was at 3am on a blind bend in the middle of nowhere!

This very rarely happens to me. But im not generally piddling along so maybe in there eyes the risk is too high.

Had some of the country road groups who clear the road slow as possible. That lasted untill I dropped a gear and floored it in the old transit. Suddenly they wanted to be off the road very fast. And strange they always cleared promptly after that.

Happened to me with a group of teenagers on the N7 heading towards Dublin near Kill, about two months ago. They nearly ended up Killed. It was about 8.30pm, so dark and they were all wearing dark clothing sauntering across all three lanes. Had to jam on and they stopped and gave me the finger.

Happened again last week at a junction in Rathfarnham, he stood and waited for me to get close then just walked out in front of me so I had to slam on and the guy behind me nearly ran into the back of me. Got a right fright.

It's an ancient game. It's called Darwin.

    Heh :)

Actually, it sounds a lot like 'Chicken', a game that was certainly popular in the 80s. Except in chicken you didn't go slowly, you waited until the last possible second to leg it across the road. Another variant played with trains is to stand on the line and wait until the last possible second to jump out of the way of the train before it hits you. So yeah, Darwinism :)

Had someone walk out in front of my car on the M50 about a month ago.

Just before exit 7 heading North.

He was waving his hands trying to get me to stop. Had to swerve into the other lane to avoid him.

Think he was playing the 'I'm going to rob your car' game.

about a year or so ago .. teenagers playing this on the M2 Ashbourne Bypass watched as one or their mates ended up getting hit by a 70mph car ... I wonder how many kept playing the game after laying flowers on the side of the road and carrying the coffin

    .Results of the Chicken Game

It's one of the things I hate about driving in Cork; People act a bit like flies on a glass when it comes to road crossing - they just dart in the middle of the road without looking, on any stretch of road, at any age, any day of the week. The Douglas area and surroundings are particularly bad, especially the residential parts towards Grange: joggers, power walkers and people walking dogs more often than not just decide to cross and go on with not an hint of a look to check if a vehicle might be inbound. Gets sillier late at night as the mental process is probably "ah sure, nobody will be driving this late!".

Worst one just last Saturday night, around 1am: a couple well in their 50s just darted to the middle of the road where Four Star Pizza is in Douglas; It was raining quite badly, some of the streetlights were out, the bend is a blind one and, to top it off, both of them where dressed in black head to toe and with a black umbrella. You'd wonder how did they manage to reach that age.

    I was thinking that myself!

I had some lunatic with no shirt on run in front of my car then start jumping around in the middle of the road. He went to the other side and tried the same with a taxi. This was at the 5 lamps in Fairview, Dublin.

Also, this trend will get worse. You know those cars that will automatically avoid crashes that will be on sale in a few years? Can see people just walking into traffic for the craic :(

Drop a gear and accelerate. That should clear the road for you.
