    Hello

My 16 year old is going to France for an exchange trip, staying with a family outside Lyons. They have said they will bring him to the local ski resprt for some skiing, snowboarding perhaps and some ice skating.

I rang one company this morning (AA) and they said they wouldnt cover him for winter sports as he would not be with a parent and was under 18.

I am in work now so cannot make a load of calls...any idea who might cover him and what might be best company to go with?

Obviously we do not need cancellation insurance, equipment insurance etc. We do have private medical insurance with Aviva but they only cover on piste skiing.

    many thanks fro any suggestions

Some ski areas offer their own insurance, you can buy it on the day. Maybe check that that's an option?

If your Aviva policy will cover on-piste skiing for him that should be fine- they probably wouldn't be going off-piste anyway (and if they were, you can set them straight, lol!).

This issue to clarify with Aviva is whether he's covered on-piste in France without a parent- can you nominate the exchange parent as his temporary guardian?

The other thing is, his EH1C card will cover him for a quite a lot of medical care anyway, if he requires it, it just doesn;t cover rescue from the mountain. Definitely make hsure he has that before he goes, it's much handier to use for everyday GP visits etc if necessary over there.

I'd say get on to Aviva and check out that piece about the nominated guardian, and if they say no, ask what they suggest as an alternative- the lad is 16 after all, it's not reasonable to expect him to have a parent with him at all times! Good luck :-)

Like Cormee said, it is often possible to get insurance included on your lift pass for a small daily fee. I've seen this offered in France - check with the family.
