    Hi all,

Just wondering does anyone have any experience/opinions of these?

From what I've heard, the 140 2.0 PD TDI's are bad news and quite troublesome (balance shafts and injector issues?)

Presumably the 170 version is the same engine with just a bigger turbo?

I know the older 1.9 PD 130 engines are ultra reliable (I currently have one of these in a well minded Audi A4 with 134k and it feels like it will keep going forever!)

So, is the 170 PD a decent, reliable engine or is it a volcano of issues waiting to erupt? (like the N47)

As far as I am aware that problem was specific to the '05 ~'07 audi A4 model.

    170 never had that problem
Main issue witht hem was injectors which was a recall and the dpf can and will give trouble especially if driven with economy in mind.

Interesting, I wonder why it was specific to A4's considering it also came in Octavia VRS, Passats, Superbs and Golfs?

Also, I think some can be gotten without DPF's if I'm not mistaken!? (which I would definitely try to avoid)

My understanding the balance shaft was changed/added in the A4 to make the engine smoother (because the A4 is a more upmarket car). To keep costs down this change wasn't made in lower end cars. However this balancer shaft causes issues.

Basically the Audi A4 (and possibly A6) has a slightly different 2.0L engine than the rest of the range.

There was in injector recall on the octavia's.

I know we had 2 Passat 170 PD engined cars on fleet, and both gave serious issues with the injectors - ended up taking them off the drivers, and off the road, as it wasn't worth the costs of keeping them on the road.

Injector's have been recalled since then I believe.

    Injectors gave trouble in:

    All 170bhp versions.
Passat 140bhp but no other 140bhp version. For some reason the 140bhp Passat used the troublesome Siemens injectors whereas all other 140bhp engines used the Bosch injectors which were reliable.

As already mentioned, this issue has been the subject of a recall for a few years now so it is no longer anything to worry about.

    Balance shafts were fitted to:

    Passat
    A4
    A6

The Golf, A3, Octavia and all other Mk5 Golf based cars didn't have a balance shaft.

DPFs give trouble in all PD engines where fitted, which is mostly only the 170bhp engines with only the odd 140bhp having a DPF.

Thanks for that, so a 170 VRS Octavia or Golf GT TDI should be a relatively safe bet?

Do all 170 have a DPF?

Yes all of the 170bhp have a DPF.

To be honest if I was in the market for an Octavia RS diesel I would spend the extra few quid and get one with the common rail engine. They are a far better engine. Smoother power delivery, more refined, better economy and much less chance of DPF issues.

    Fully agree with this
the CR engine in the vRS rarely give dpf issues when driven properly.

Well I'd be looking at Golf mk5 or A3 around 06/07, did these come with the CR 170?

Could always get the DPF removed, no?

The CR engines were only introduced in 2008.
