Bottom bracket issues

So I was cleaning the commuter at the weekend and I noticed that there is a big of play in the bottom bracket/cranks and i'm wondering how big a deal this is.

I have a square taper bottom bracket and there was probably a good 1-2 cm of play in there. Tried to tighten the bolt on the crank arm but couldn't get it any tighter (couldn't loosen it either if i'm honest). It could be my imagination, but it also seemed like there was more play when the crank was in certain positions than others. The whole crankset moves laterally when I push in or out.

Is this a big deal? I've had no problems shifting or otherwise and i'm perfectly happy to run the thing into the ground and just chuck the BB/crankset when it outlives its usefullness, but i'm wondering if i'm possibly doing more damage by taking this approach than by just fixing the underlying issue. Could this be an issue with the bearings?

I'm guessing you mean 1-2mm and not CM's?

I probably wouldn't bother doing anything and keep using it till it starts creaking or grinding and then replace it.

Its an easy repair, if you have the right tools. e.g crank extractor and BB Spanner. If you don't, then bring it to your LBS. they should be able to tighten it in a few minutes.

Sorry CJC, yeah I meant 1-2 mm.

Have the crank extractor but I ripped the threads the last time I tried to remove it so I would probably need to resort to the hammer and chisel option of getting the BB off (hence my reluctance).

Presume that continuing to cycle on this will probably wear the casette and chain prematurely as well?
