How to find how much advertised job pays?

I am interested in a number of jobs online but they generally dont give salary details. I am working at the moment earning approx 40k but want to move for various reasons. Naturally I dont want a pay cut but am unsure if the new jobs pay more or less. I also understand that companies might wait to see applicants before deciding on salary. Is it possible to ask, even the salary range?

    Just ask?

You can look up some info on salaries on sites like glassdoor, and also a few recruitment agencies publish annual salary surveys with guideline ranges for different roles and locations.

For specific roles you're applying to, usually when someone contacts you they will ask you about your salary expectations; this is the time to get a feel for what they are offering, even though they probably won't give you a number.

If they ask you for a number, tell them either what you're on now, or the range you've found through your research. Listen to what their response is, and if they're giving nothing away just ask 'does that sound reasonable for this role?' or 'is that in line with this role's salary range?'

If they don't mention salary at all, at the end of the call just say something like 'I hate to mention this at such early stages, but I'd like to get an idea of the salary range for the role.' Alternatively, wait and see if they call you in for interview and ask then; at that stage you already have a foot in the door and, in my opinion at least, it's only fair that you know what kind of salary you're looking at if you're taking time out of work to interview.

Thanks for the opinion, its an accounting role where there are no set rates like other jobs, it really depends on experience and the size of the company. I am just coming to the end of exams this year so if my salary can go up by 5 grand this year I'll be happy. Some roles state 40000-50000 which is quite a large. I think I might just ask if they call, its all large companies I'm looking to move to so they will have dedicated HR departments.
