30 odd quid for a cartell test. I just remember someone doing it for others in the past on hete. if it was 7 Id gladly pay it. just dont want to pay 30 for one of many potential cars.

€35 for a very comprehensive report from motorcheck. 5 or so pages. A very small amount for her to be spending for peace of mind!
Only do the check if she is certain that its the car she wants.

as I said, if she had chosen the car wed get the full check and a mechanic out to check everything. for now, its one of a few.

I'd go look at the car and run a check before I fully decide to take it. You never know, the seller may run it at their expense

Some dealers have the history reports ready to hand for each car.

    It's a silver Audi A3 3 door 1.4 petrol automatic. Anything else?

The motorcheck is 20 for a vehicle history check, and when you have paid this fee they tend to send on a voucher for another 1 or 2 reports on different cars for approx 5 euro each. If she is checking a few could be handy as it would work out 30/35 for three history reports.
I'll check motorcheck & see if I have a voucher code or something as I got a report done earlier this week and didn't use the voucher

Edited to add - that reg is showing on the motorcheck website at the bottom of the page as being searched today -
    09D27407 Audi A3 1.4 Tfsi Ambit...

shes very keen on this particular car but that dealer has some bad reports on here so Im wary for her.

Ok look, I was taking the piss there a bit. But seriously, I've been in your shoes many times. Either recommend a Toyota or stay out of it. You'll be the worst cnut in the world if anything goes wrong. At least Toyotas don't break that much.

ammj7ab - code for 3 euro off a report. Not much but every little helps!

no worries. ive recommended a toyota/focus/mazda but she wants audi. thats her choice and she knows that. I just dont want to see her stuck with a total lemon. I told her, if she buys it, to factor in a timing belt change immediately just in case

Cartell is actually a better report, but none of them can check if the car is stolen.

The reports arent really all that comprehensive at all tbh. Useful for the things that they might tell you, but just because something isnt flagged up doesnt mean that its not an issue, if that makes sense?

Still worth the few quid it costs to run them.

Can't comment on Cartell, but Motorcheck says if the car was ever reported stolen.

Reported stolen to them. I dont think either Motorcheck or Cartell have access to the Gardai database of stolen cars.

Unfortunately they cannot tell if a car was previously reported stolen or is currently stolen, they can only tell if there was an insurance claim in relation to a theft. Apparently unlike the UK there's a data protection difficulty here in the guards sharing information with private companies. I understand that the companies are currently trying to rectify that, but it's been going on for some time now.

Wise words hence my OH was landed with an old Avensis 2.0TD tank and told if she breaks it she's doing something wrong.........and not to worry if she bangs it if a wall. She's living in Scotland so reliability and ease of maintenance were the biggest priorities. Something better can be purchased in 2015.

Sure I'm driving one myself. 5 and a half years of abuse and it's never broken down or given trouble. The missus has a Yaris too. Yeah there are nicer cars out there, but if you're a tight cnut like me who hates spending money fixing them, Toyota is your only man!:D

In my experience i have found motorcheck to be the better report. Cartell only told me that their mas a mileage discrepancy nothing else, where as motorcheck told me what mileage was recorded on what particular date and buy who.

Other than the high mileage, it looks like a nice car. Rear wiper is hitting the paintwork so would need a closer look to see what's up with it.

As I mentioned, if she was definitely buying or viewing this car she would pay for it. I just googled the dealer here and he had some had reviews. Ive seen people do it here before (very kindly) so I said Id ask. When Ive offered people advice about their cars in the past, my response wasnt to say "spend 50 euro and ask a mechanic". People in this forum are very helpful in general.

Shes not buying for a few more weeks so if she decides on that car, we'll get the check.

Unless you're committed to buying there's no point in doing a history check, unless you've loads of money. If your going to buy it do an inspection and then the history check. If you live far away history check first then inspection.

One thing I noticed when looking at cars was that any good ones don't stay for sale long, so if a car has been up for a while it's usually not great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,368 ✭✭✭king_of_inismac

Absolutely. I've only bought privately in the past myself and have done what you've suggested.

I guess the fact that it's a small petrol auto (which is what she wants) would make it quite undesirable in Ireland at the moment, so I'm not overly worried about the long sale time.

On the contrary, small petrol autos are in short supply meaning they command decent money and get snapped up fairly fast.

Not true. I bought a genuinely spotless Merc last month from a main Merc dealer that had been for sale for 3 months.

Why wasn't it selling? It was wayyyyy over-priced (infact it wasn't even coming up on my searches as I was capping max price). I only came across it through someone else. Rang the dealer with a low-ball (but genuine) offer, backed up by the marketing manager of the place stating that my offer was genuine (I know him) - A week later the car was mine.

Dealer couldn't have been more helpful, and i'm not one to speak highly of dealers in general. Car failed NCT on front shocks - 2 days later the car was back at the dealer having new shocks fitted. Passed obviously (nice one, got 2 new front shocks for free)

I genuinely feel like I got a bargain - the same car, with higher milage, bought private from the UK would have cost me about an extra €1k by the time travel etc. was factored in  To give a monetary example, the closest fitting car after that which I could find, was from a dealer (not main), lower spec, higher milage but a year newer - 'cash' price was €3.5k extra

Sports Seats, Multi Function Steering Wheel, Climate Control - all looks good.

Based on where it's being sold from, I still wouldn't, even with a naked Scarlett Johansson on the passenger seat.
