    Hi,

I am thinking about moving to Avondale, Raheny soon and it turns out that upc isnt available. Are there any other tv options available apart from sky/saorview/freesat?

    Thanks

In that part of Raheny they have their own cable TV. It comes from a mast beside Manor House school. It is there since the 70s & they have an exclusive licence so upc are not allowed in.

The cable is cheap & you get around 12 stations. No option for movie channels etc. You could get Netflix for €8 a month and keep the cable. That'd work out cheaper than sky.

I grew up not far from there so pm me if you need any more help

Netflix? Can you get decent broadband if "UPC are not allowed in"?

Does this cable system only carry a limited selection of channels that are free-to-air anyway, from satellite or terrestrial transmitters? There's no point to systems like that nowadays, unless people have a real aversion to putting up their own dishes & aerials. Anywhere that doesn't allow individual aerials & dishes, would be better served by distributing the actual DVB-S signal (along with DVB-T), rather than converting a select few satellite channels to some other standard.

It is a non profit thing run by the residents. It covers Avondale, Maywood, Bettyglen, foxes Lane, one Side of the howth road from the village to the coast road & bettyglen the village.
It would have all the basic channels that upc would have in their non digital package. Maybe 12 to 15 channels in total. There is no option to pay for sport or movies. A lot of the residents have sky dishes too so they can pay for anything extra that way.

Didn't cable licence exclusivity end about 2003/04, only general authorisations now?
    What is their company name?

I'm all for this kind of thing, if it's kept up-to-date. There's an estate near me where the original part has such a system (terrestrial aerials, could just about get an acceptable signal from the north for analogue, don't know what Freeview is like) & it contrasts with subsequent additions with the forest of rooftop aerials. Of course most of the houses have dishes now too, so probably not much point in upgrading the communal system for satellite IF distribution.

Certainly a turnaround from scenarios where subscription only companies existed on an exclusive basis in certain developments, lol!

There may still be licences under the 1974 Regulations in force, some smaller companies did not give their's up at the time the 1999 Regulations came into force. I cannot find anything on ComReg's site though to tell me if this is the case.

No new licences were issued under the 1974 Regulations once the 1999 Regulations came into force. The licences issued under the 1999 Regulations had their exclusivity revoked in return for easing off on the rollout requirements for digital cable but this didn't apply to the 1974 licences. The 1999 licences were later traded for general authorisations.
