Four months ago I fitted an Insert Stove to the fire place in my sitting room - I'm happy with same but have now decided to knock a wall and open up the sitting room into the kitchen. I would now like to take out the Insert Stove & open up the Fireplace and fit a free standing stove. Can someone please advise if this is a big job - I don't have a chimney breast in the room - the fireplace is flush on the wall - it backs on to a fire place in my front room which has a chimney breast.

I know you will think I am mad and should have done this in the first place......but please tell me if this is a big job to correct.

I would really appreciate if someone could advise me!!
    Tks:)

I think that this is more suitable in the construction froum as it is mainly a building project rather than an appliance issue.

It could vary in complexity but isn't that complex a job. Although you've not got a protruding breast on the sitting room side, you've got a breast nonetheless - it's merely a matter of where the dividing wall between the rooms was placed (flush with the sitting room side of the chimney structure in your case: envisage the chimney structure as a standalone tower with dividing walls placed up to it).

I don't see anything in it that the average small-job builder couldn't do for you although there will be mess involved.

Question them on that score: how they will carry out the works so as not to wreck the rest of your house with dirt on shoes /raising dust etc. Note too that breaking open the chimney face to raise it sufficient for a inset will disturb smell-impregnated brickwork - that is smell from fires past. Have them paint the new plasterwork with BIN paint to seal the smell in before final paintwork is applied

    Best of luck..
