Importing a Car from Northern Ireland

I am looking to purchase a used BMW 1 Series and have a budget of around €10k.

I have been looking at importing from Northern Ireland but this process is new to me.

Has anyone had any experience of this and if so when you factor in VRT etc.. does it save you money on average?

    Cheers

    There's no average.
On some cars you do save, on some cars you don't.
Google "VRT calculator" and enter details of car you want to buy, to find out how much VRT you will have to pay.

Do you want me to give you direct link to VRT calculator. If you are wary of using google, I can do - no problem.

    Here it is: VRT CALCULATOR

Why would this be a concern?
Most cars in UK have double-unit speedometres.
Also still lot's of original Irish cars have speedos in MPH (every car first registered before 2005 AFAIK).

Any particular reason you are looking to import OP? Unless your importing something exotic like an M1 or a 123d, I can't see why you would not just buy here. By the time you factor going to look and buy the car, let alone the VRT and motor tax, I doubt your going to be making much of a saving. Importing rarely makes sense unless you find an absolute bargain, rare exotic or a seriously high spec model.

It all depends on the car involved really.

You need to do the maths yourself. Find a car you like in the South and find a similar model in the North and do a comparison with VRT, NCT costs etc. included.

The process itself is fairly straightforward.
