i have a cocker whose tail is not docked...had springers who were docked, when i bought her it didnt matter to me once i had fallen in love with her, as we only walk fields and woodland as a pet, getting thorns etc in her tail is not an issue,, but you cant beat hearing a dogs tail banging off her bed when she is happy

cockers tail if docked right you should still hear it bang when their happy.should be docked to the elbow on the back leg.so you can get the nice tail action when their on a scent.not to long and not to short.

Springers or cockers if used as working dogs should have there tails docked i have two springers both working dogs mainly walked up rough shooting one is docked never had any trouble. The other i bought from a field trial champion and it had a full tail.
The first season rough shooting he split the end of his tail from trashing in heavy cover as springers do. Straight to the vet with the dog, antibiotics (stop infection),cleaned and dressing with stiches.

I asked the vet about docking the tail and he told me it was called an amputation as the dog was nearly 2 and that he wouldnt do it as he felt i only wanted it done so the dog looked nice. I pointed out too the vet that if that was true i wouldnt have brought the dog rough shooting as the dog was covered in muck and everything else he had rolled in that day. I also pointed out that this would happen again if nothing was done.

The second season and near the middle of the season the same thing happend again, back to the vet i go same treatment again i asked about the amputation of part of the tail he said no, so i changed vet and she done the operation straight away and also contacted the original vet to ask why he had not done it in the first place as it was putting the dog through unnecessary pain.
The original vet said we had never discussed this option and thats why it wasnt done.

Since the op ive never had any trouble with the tail again.

whats the story on this now, iv a litter of springer pups i want to dock

The story is i know this new law states working dogs can be docked but the real story is vets aren't taking the chance on it.iv been in touch with numerous gundog breeders/kennels and vets.it seems to be the same case around the country.vets are worried about losing their license and its just not worth the hassle.maybe lads would you ask around to see is it widespread as been pointed out to me.IF you have litters in the next few months be very careful when selling as their looking to make an example of people with prosecution.also you can go across the border to get it done but not sure on the law on it one vet told me you can still be done.i dont know about most but i hate working dogs with long tails.looks like il be going across the border to get it done.
