Selling Online.. Done Deal?

I'm not sure if there is a thread for this already, I've searched 'Done Deal' already but it doesn't really give me any relevant matches. I was just wondering if any of you have used Done Deal to sell personal stuff? I've quite a bit of unused items in the attics for years now that are no use to me but may be of use to others with young children etc. but I'm not sure whether it is recommended or how rampant are the scammers on this site?

Try Adverts. Good site, some spanners as opposed to scammers, but loads of good people on there and a good place to sell stuff.

It depends on what you're selling tbh. I have used both... If I was selling a gross of good quality silage bales, I would go donedeal, but if I was selling a digital camera, I would go adverts.

if you go adverts, expect replies from numpties offering you stupidly low bids and swops for stuff you don'tr want./ If you go donedeal expect text messages from numpties asking you how much the item is depite the fact that you have the item price learly marked along with the words NO TEXT MESSAGES

Used to use adverts but was selling something recently and had better results on DD. Adverts is full of muppets with silly offers. There's haggling and there's stupid. Item was sold within a day on DD and it was on adverts for over a week.

Don't think you have much of an option on that one, pal.

No site is "best". Donedeal is popular so prob a good bet.
Adverts is good too, just ignore the "swap for a broken ipod and a pack of chewits?" people.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,720 ✭✭✭Sir Arthur Daley

The best ones are the ones that make it to Dungdeal which is a facebook thingie, little experiment folks try this type www.dungdeal.ie into your web browser and it comes up as donedeal how come?

'Swap for bmx bike worth 500' Why are you selling it for 150 with no offers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,218 ✭✭✭✭B.A._Baracus

Adverts.ie is probably the best website in Ireland to sell things.
Of course the flaws are that you will always get people offering €5 for something that has a fair value of €60.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

What's good about adverts over donedeal is that you can ask questions and haggle in the thread, see seller feedback and ask for more/better pics etc.

On donedeal it's "buy ma carr, only 1599 uuros".

I think that means they'd rather keep it than sell cheaper than the asking price, so don't bother trying to haggle.

    Could be wrong tho.

Sold a caravan on dd once . Worst and best experience of my life nearly. Got this traveller lad ringing me giving it the mah yea 'gimme 50 euro and I'll take it away' lark. He used to ring in front of what sounded like a crowd so it was the highlight of the day. I was annoyed at first but he kept at it so I used to complain to him about how bad life gets n'all. He was gutted the day I told him I sold it. He even stopped ringing me hah. Pmsl..just be prepared for what comes out of the woodwork.- go and get a sim card don't give your personal number

Adverts is far better than Donedeal.

For a start, Adverts can be used free of charge, a major plus to begin with.

The biggest reason by far though, is that it has a Feedback facility.

Donedeal doesn't and so you have no way of knowing if someone is trustworthy or not.

Granted, if someone is a new user on Adverts, you can't either, but you can just avoid buying from those people if you want.

I always say 'No Swaps' in my ads also and if someone still offers to swap, I ignore them or occasionally post 'cash sale only' in response.

I made an offer on a Laptop in December which was accepted and ten minutes from the guy's house, he texts me and says that another guy on the thread had offered him more and just collected it. I asked him how is that possible and he said it was done via PM. Recently though, some new changes have meant that you can now only PM a seller/ buyer if an offer has been officially accepted and you can also only leave Feedback if that is the case also. I think these new rules will make using Adverts a better experience overall.

Trying to sell a Macbook on both Done Deal and Adverts at the moment. Scamming definitely seems more prominent on Done Deal. I've been regularly getting texts from people saying they are willing to pay above the odds for it if I'm willing to post it and use Paypal. Making up stuff like "i'm in the navy so cannot collect" and stuff like that.

Incase you don't know, the scam they use is taking advantage of the fact that Paypal always side with the buyer. So if a buyer opens a ticket saying the goods were faulty or missing or whatever else wrong then Paypal will give them a full refund regardless. Meaning the buyer gets a free item.

    Very annoying.

That's not how it works at all (really)

PayPal is a very efficient and trustworthy company. They don't just refund buyers willy nilly AFAIK.

More often what happens is, the fake buyer will usually offer you above odds price of whatever item your selling. He will insist that he pays through PayPal, which, once you provide him with an address linked to your PayPal account, you'll usually receive a spoof email from PayPal soon after.

The email from 'paypal' will look genuine enough, (these guys are making a out of this remember) followed by an email that claims the item needs to be posted asap (due to a birthday/wedding/etc).

Only problem being, no money has reached your PayPal account. So you contact fake buyer with your concerns, they reassure you due to some new 'security features' the money is being securely held by PayPal and will only be released when you provide tracking number of the goods that have been shipped.

Needless to say, once you provided that tracking number, no money will be released because it was never paid. And your goods are winging there way across the globe to some scammer.

Amazing just how many people will fall for it tbh.

Try giving an email address that has absolutely no connection to paypal for proof.

That is one way of scamming, the upside to it for the scammer is that they don't need the funds to submit initially and there is zero risk of paypal rejecting their claim and them losing their money. The downside tho is that it's fairly easy to spot.

The scam I mentioned tho is also prevalent. http://www.theguardian.com/money/2012/jan/27/is-paypal-safe-protection

In the article it lists only people who allowed the buyer to collect the item but it also works if you don't use a registered courier. Even if you do use a registered courier all the buyer has to do is take a picture of a faulty item claiming it was what you sent them and Paypal will side with them and refund their money.

Paypal's policy is if in doubt, side with the buyer.

There are probably was of protecting against this. Taking videos of the item working and of you packing the item and handing it to the courier or something like that. It's a bloody minefield tho and impossible to be 100% sure that Paypal won't side with the buyer anyway so I won't be going near it as a seller.

If I was a buyer I would use adverts as prices seem to be lower than on other sites which have less savvy users. So if I was selling something I'd probably be better to use donedeal if I was bothered.

ebay sellers fees together with paypal are a scam, about 13%.
plus ebay charges 10% on your postage. not fair.

Adverts is full of d1cks who offer less than you want and when you accept, they will not reply.

Donedeal all the way. A phone call is far better than all the adverts BS.

Why has craigslist not taken off in Ireland?
It be a one stop shop for all advertisements. Instead you have a multitude of different sites with different rules and charges.

from my experience done deal is far better than adverts.ie for selling most things, as it has a much bigger audience. The dogs in the street know what done deal is, but a lot of people have never heard of adverts.ie

I would rarely buy online as the price that people ask for their second hand goods is pathetic. In a lot of cases you can get items new for cheaper than second hand goods.

I'm on adverts and some other sites looking for some second hand equipment for my camera and I can get it online for cheaper. People have their heads up their arses when it comes to second hand goods.

Sure I bought it 3 years ago for 1200, surely it's worth 1000, when realistically it's about 800-900 new on amazon or what not...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,443 ✭✭✭Bipolar Joe

Steveone gave the best advice, pick up a spare SIM and use that to sell. Do not use your private or personal number. It might be a little bit of hassle now, but believe me, getting two hundred phone calls from morons at all hours of the day for weeks is obviously far worse.

Adverts and DD both have their individual faults. At least Adverts are attempting to fix them, which makes it stand out to me. There's still the issue of people not reviewing a buyer or seller, which has almost screwed me. I was gonna buy something on it, and the seller got the days mixed up, bunch of other crap happened and I got a shitty review. For ages that was my only one, and people notice that. Never mind that I travelled cross country to buy a violin and never got a review for that, or the other things I bought. That one time, and it's not even my fault :(:( . I do wish it was compulsory to review both seller and buyer.

I sold stuff on DD that prob wouldn't have gotten a look in on boards, building supplies/joinery and that kind of merch but I've bought (a kitchen!) on Adverts and it was a handier way to communicate the sale and get the job done, none of the texting and waiting for calls as with DD and at least you can keep an eye on what's going on with adverts. Depends on what you're selling I suppose.
