I'm considering buying one of these cars. Just looking for some feedback from anyone that's had one for a few years. Are they reliable? Any potential problems to look out for? Is the engine economical and yet strong enough for a car of this size. Any advice greatly appreciated.

A mate of mine has one from new and it is a great engine. His Octavia does not feel underpowered with the TSI engine in it at all.
Potential problems are centred around the turbo and also the timing chain.
My mate's one has had a shim installed in the turbo under a "service bulletin" and recently the timing chain on his car stretched after only 50k kms. Apparently the timing chain issue is well documented on the net. He argued with Skoda Ireland about the chain issue and had it done as a goodwill gesture seeing as it was only recently out of warranty.
Buy a car with a warranty and you should be OK.

Would be a big improvement on the old 1.4 anyway.

Engine too small. Consider larger option.

My mother has the sane engine in her Yeti and I've spent the day driving in it. I simply love it. We've had it 12 months and it's been fine although I'd be pissed if there was an issue in that time frame. I find it very nippy within legal speeds. Forget about the fact its a 1.2 and give it a chance. Its a nippy engine.

What I will say however is that it has averaged 40mpg in our hands and will drop if you work it hard. If you're doing low miles like ours is (9k KMs in 12 months) I wouldn't worry.

I find it great and would happily recommend it. Just be aware that those who tell you its too small have never actually driven it........isn't that right Jesus ;)
