Buying new car not sure which is best.

Hi, im driving daily and my wife will be using the car i am now driving. I have about 10000 euro to spend-max.

I drive between 60 and 100 kms daily to and back from work. i live in the countryside.

I was looking at 09 and 10 passats and jettas, 09 volvo s40s, and 08 09 3 series bmws. now i started looking at 10 or 11 focus' and am looking for advice.

Which should I go with? petrol or diesel?

Feel im always filling up with the petrol car i have now but im often on the road i suppose. want a relatively new car as want a better chance of things not breaking down and would like the lower rate of tax and a comfortable car with some room as we have a baby. Reliability would be high on my priority list.

All advice or suggestions welcome. thanks.

What are you driving at the moment?

On a budget of 10k and looking to get as new as possible you will be looking at high mileage diesel cars in the likes of Passats, etc. I'd focus more on the condition of the car than the year on the number plate.

For me that mileage would justify a diesel alright.

Ok thanks for feedback. driving a mazda 3 1.6 at the moment. would a 2010 focus be a good purchase ye think? say a 1.6 diesel? Would ye say its more important to get a high milage newer car or a good condition lower milage 08 or 09? Want to keep maintenance costs low.

My view would be that if you are going to have the car a long time, you are going to hit the same maintenance costs. It is just a matter of when, not if.

That is not taking into account any possible issues with individual engines from year to year.

In your situation, sticking to the new tax system would be an important factor if I was toying with the idea of an 08 which could then include some nice examples of 07 cars.

Personally if I was buying a focus I would go for the 1.8 instead of the 1.6. The 1.8 is an older less refined engine but it should prove much more reliable.

It depends how long term you're thinking of keeping it for but given you will be putting up 500km+ a week I would be inclined to look for one with lower mileage. But in the long run you will incur the same maintenance costs regardless.
A Focus would be a good option I think too.

I personally don't like Seat's. Any I Have been in have been desperately uncomfortable to sit in, but they are good mechanically.

I sat in one of those Renault Megane's in a dealership in Limerick today. 100k km. 1.5 2011 diesel, in black. One lady owner etc. 10,700. In the quick spin I did in it, the cabin was fine, I liked the seats. Loads of room in the boot. Main thing that was bugging me was that it was suspiciously cheap.

Anyone have strong opinions on them?
