Deer in the Phoenix Park

Does anyone know if it's legal to feed the deer in the Phoenix Park?

I was on a run in the park today and came across a family with two young kids hand feeding a small group of deer breakfast cereal and fruit by the road across from the park.

Apart from the rights and wrongs of feeding the deer, they had unwittingly attracted a group right by the road. I didn't want to interfere but inwittingly, they had created a dangerous scenario whereby deer were crossing the road to feed. I knew that as soon as I ran past some of the deer would scatter so I slowed right down and still some of them were startled and bolted right across the road, which very nearly caused an accident as there were cars parked up watching and others flying past.

I didn't know the rules, but I knew what they were doing was potentially going to cause an accident. I didn't want to be a prat and lecture them but I knew they were unaware of the dangers behind them. I lied and told the father that it was illegal to feed the deer and in fairness they stopped. I didn't know what else to do, but I do know from experience that attracting them near busy roads is an accident waiting to happen.
