Windows and insulation

I had hoped to get my cavity walls pumped but on inspection found we have hollow block! Now Im looking at spending alot more money( not good). Im leaning towards external insulation at the back and side and internal at front. Not ideal but i hope a reasonable compromise.
I need to get this right and so would like some advice on how to approach the job with regard to getting insulation and windows done with effective insulation results.
Any opinions? One suggestion was to insulate into the opening and get slightly smaller windows. Im mot sure how this would work.
Also i had thought about fitting the external insulation myself and employing an experienced plasterer to do the render to save costs and i think if i fitted the insulation I would be more particular with getting the details right. Has anyone gone this route?
