so having saved my pennies and a cold winter with not enough fuel for my heating system i have went in search of my new chainsaw to end this problem. i have the trees and now its time for the saw. my local dealer have a range of old and new saws and any saw is not a problem to source for me but i showed me a very well minded stihl 038 magnum with a 20 inch bar for 500. my question for you fine ppl of boards is am i mad.. its 8yrs old. but i can get a less power 445 huskey with a 16 inch for 525. both saws come with a year warranty.

i had a oleo mac 962 with 18inch bar till it gave in early last year due to age and lack of use over a long period of time..
i ve heard 038 are a great saw. but grumpy if not looked after but having got no help or info or advice on a saw of this age and size i need a for or against arguement.

    thanks in advance.

For 500, you should be able to at least get a newer used Stihl MS440 or 044 in good condition, or a Husqvarna 365 or 372. All of which are not only less old, but have shown to be very reliable and good runners. How large are the trees you'll be sawing? PM me if you have any questions.

Is the Husky 445 new ?? Should come with 2 yrs warranty if new. If your spending that amount of money as well to buy new at least you know what your getting

That's crazy money for a used 038. Them 962 oleo macs are actually regarded as a good saw. What's wrong with it? With a good service you could possibly have a good saw again for little expense unless it's scored or Smth more sinister.

The Oleomac 962 are very good saw I know of at least 2 people using them as firewood saws full time and they have lasted incredibly well.
They have a magnesium crankcase unlike a lot of lesser saws.
If that died from neglect then a new one may suffer the same fate as newer stuff is even more picky with regards to fuel quality.

Stihl places a sticker on the handle, which promptly wears off. Thank you, Stihl. Otherwise, you have to go by the serial number or the top plate, if that is still there. Hopefully you got a hell of a deal on that saw if neither you, nor the seller, had any clue what it was. ;)
