New Holland 8340 Starting Problems

    Hi All,
I have a 98 Nh 8340sle , great tractor have put 9300 hours on it now with a leaking rear hub seal and a water pump being the only major problem. Not bad going for a tractor I was warned to stay away from when buying!!! So now all ye SLE haters!! ha.
There is one issue with the tractor that has always been in it and I have literally tried everything over the last 4 years.. In cold/damp weather only way to start it is a jump lead!!Also when hot cannot knock it off or no start..
Ive done everything, new batteries, installed second battery to boost amps and wired together to give 1600 cranking amps , reconditioned starter and had it tested working perfect. New battery leads, even moved earthing point for negative up to starter bolt.. But still no joy.
I was told today about a gear reduction starter, pricey but sounds like my next step?? Any views , all feedback and comments appreciated.:eek::eek:

Have you run a heavy earth cable from the engine block to the tractor body? And your starter - the one that was reconditioned and tested as good? Is it? Buy a new starter and put that on, with a heavy earth to the tractor body, totally clean contacts.

can starter ever swing engine to start at all without booster battery?

just wonder would it be cut-off or isolater switch, most tractors are fitted with isolater switches which though never used cause problems, including charging batteries , check condition of cables and connections at rear, these switches have given trouble in bucketfuls mostly in tractors never housed around here, some can be cleaned internally and filled with copper grease, some even though heavy duty had to be replaced.not expensive anyway,
try checking by putting jump lead on starter end of cable -coming off switch- and on battery end when starting, will make difference to swinging speed if switch faulty, check all wiring connections apart from corrosion if oil dries on them it becomes like piece of insulating material in contacts reducing current flow.hi-speed starter will help but poor connections etc will still reduce starter performance.

Had same issue with a 6 month old isolstor. Had to remove it then no issues starting.

Sorry for the ridiculously late update but the geared starter sorted the problem out... unbelieveable difference.. well worth the €200 or so

good luck with it , had to take starter off MF 399 during week all hell broke loose, starter, alternator whole shebang went wallop. have clutch slipping issue as well and was going to do the lot later. (long finger again)
had to remove bolts completely to take off starter( hydraulic pump in way, what genius designed that), talk about muck ,removed bottom plate under clutch to discover housing was half full of muck etc, so that sorted clutch slipping issue (i think).

about 2 years ago i replaced alternator , was told rectifier was bandjaxed so purchased new alternator . only to discover the brush springs were cracked, in old one, €30 euro repair job.:(. lucky for me i didn't allow supplier to" throw it in skip for me".
new gear starter are same length as old so replacing will be another nightmare as an oil flow pipe to hydraulic pump prevents access to inner top bolt of starter, used chisel and hammer to tap it open: :( it's the one thing about MF that drives me bonkers. they lacked basic cop on when putting tractors together and hang about 3 items on average on every bolt. replacing slave cylinders on axle is another nightmare.
