Deduction from bonus/commission

    Im looking for some advice on this;

    I work for a company where we get a monthly commission based on our sales as well as our basic wage. This month my colleagues and I have had our total commission deducted due to a loss incurred by the company. We were informed verbally that a deduction would be made to cover the loss incurred but were not told the exact amount. There was no disciplinary hearing nor were we told that the loss was from our negligence but that is a different matter for another day. Basically I am trying to find out if this deduction can be made as it isnt from my basic wage but from my commission. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Did you meet your targets to earn your commission?

    And are those targets in your contract?

    Bonuses are discretionary unless specifically awarded as per the terms of your contract.

    Thanks, I had a feeling they didnt have as much protection as normal pay.

    Was the loss that occurred on one of your previous sales like the non payment of an invoice or a customer going bust owing a lot if debt?

    If its an unrelated issue it shouldn't effect you unless your employer is in a bit of financial trouble themselves?

    The key is if your commission is laid out in your contract and if deductions are permitted.
