I graduated with a general arts degree last year and I want to give accountancy a go. I have one question; will I be at a disadvantege from other trainee accountants if they have accountant degrees and as such, will the process take longer for me?

    Thank you!

Yes, the process will take longer for you as many students who have accounting degrees will be exempt from doing certain exams when studying for their qualification. Also having no business, economics or accounting background will make it harder for you IMHO as companies would be more likely to hire people with that background. Although saying that, if you really want to become an accountant do try it. It just depends how much you want it. I think it will take longer for you, and possibly harder but if you really want something go for it.

If you're thinking about the ACA route (Chartered Accountant), I'd heavily recommend doing a Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting. Not only does it teach you the fundamentals of accounting from scratch, but you get full CAP1 exemptions. The PDA heavily narrows the gap with Accounting Students. What's more, if you get accepted into the Big 4 during your PDA, they normally offer to pay half your college fees.

People doing the PDA tend to come from arts, law, and science backgrounds; with many not having done accounting for the Leaving Cert.

And a PDA reduces your training contract to just 3 years.

Correct. It helped me get a job in one of the big4 so I would recommend it. But be warned its a tough year and a heavy workload. Id say you'l realise early on if the profession is for you. Good luck!

Or, go into the Elevation Programme where there is no training contract. I know that most elevation students (me included) aren't from an accounting background... I'm from an Arts background and have gone through several sets of exams and am working away at my experience. I work in industry.
