    My race bike is 10 speed and my winter bike is 9 speed. To get the winter bike to 10 speed I presume I need:

    * 10 speed shifter
    * 10 speed cassette ( Is getting just one more cog an option?)

    Do I also need a new derailleur and/or a new chain?

    Yes and yes.

    No.

    You probably do not need a new derailleur if it is the same system (Shimano - Shimano).

    You need a new 10-speed chain.

    Derailleur, chain and you will need to check will your wheel take a 10 speed.

    I would have thought the 9 spd derailleur won't have enough travel to move to a tenth cog will it?

    Changed from 9 speed (campag) to 10 speed over the winter and kept the old derailleur. Plenty of travel although you will need to adjust the limit screws and check the indexing.

    I would say there will be no problem at all with a 9-speed derailleur in a 10-speed cassette.

    For Shimano the derailleurs are interchangeable, if you check the technical specs for equivalent 9 and 10 speed rear derrailleurs you will see they are practically identical in every (well the few I have checked) scenario.
