Getting a reference

I'm moving to the States soon and want to get a reference from my previous employer.

However their policy is not to issue written references, and only give them by phone. My problem is that I'm moving to the west coast, so getting in touch with people via phone when there's an 8 hour time difference may well be problematic.

Are they obliged to provide me with a written reference? Or at least a statement of employment, proving I worked there? I understand they don't want to give written character references, but I could do with some proof that I've had the job for the last couple of years!

    Thanks

Unfortunately there is no statutory requirement for a company to give you any reference at all. They can do so at their discretion.

Have you tried giving them a written request explaining what you need and the reasons why a phone one might be difficult for you ?

Just sent that off today. Hopefully it won't be a problem.

I can possibly ask someone who used to be my manager there and then moved elsewhere. I suppose as she's not in the company anymore their rules wouldn't apply to her?

Yes, I would do that. They should take her as a valid reference.

Excellent. Well, my emails are sent into the ether - hopefully something will come of it!

American hiring manager gets to the office at 8am, and callls Irish manager for whom it is 4pm. Where's the problem in that?

I know it's possible, it's just problematic - not every office will have people working from 8am, people might have meetings/stuff to do in afternoons. I'll still pass on phone numbers in case someone wants to have a chat in person.

It would just be easier if I had something in writing.
