New car advice

I'm looking into buying a second hand car but I want a bit of advice on a few things first..
I drive around 45 miles/day, 5 days a week to work, most of which is on the motorway. At weekends I would just be pottering around town, except the very odd road trip here or there :cool: I started out thinking I needed a diesel engine but from reading previous threads I'm starting to veer back to petrol-maybe a 1.3 or 1.4L engine. What do ye think?
On the other hand I'm looking at a 2010 ford fiesta style 1.4L diesel which fits my price range nicely, hoping to spend about 10k including my own trade in (which would be worth around 2.5k).
I'm not great on cars so if anyone has any recommendations that fit my criteria i'd love the input!
