    Hi everyone!
I really want to do BESS in trinity but I'm a bit confused when it comes to the points so hopefully someone can help me out :)
I noticed that there is a limited amount of places.. So say last year the points were 495 and I got 495.. Do I get put in a draw or what measures do they take to select the students got the minimum amount.. Also say I got 500.. Am I put into BESS straight away then? :)

Sorry if they're silly questions but I'm just wondering how it all works :p

The points for each course change year to year. The way it works is if there are say 300 places (I think BESS is about that), then out of the people who have applied, the top 300 with the highest points get in. The points are therefore set by the last person to get a place. If it comes down to a case where there are more people on the same points then there are places left, it comes down to random selection. If you don't already, get yourself a copy of the CAO handbook (I think it's also online), it'll explain it better than I can :)

The points could rise by 50 and they could fall by 50. There is no way to tell what points will be. It's based on supply and demand.

If BESS is what you want to do, put it as your first choice. Do the best you can in your leaving cert, thats all you can do

Just to reiterate: No college or course sets points. It's not that there's a minimum amount of points you need to be accepted.

Like Polka Dot said, imagine there were 300 places on a course. When the LC results come out, everyone who applied for it (via CAO) is put into a list, in order of the points they got. The top 300 people on that list get offered the places. The 495 that you see quoted, then, is just the points of the last person who got in (person number 300 on the list). There's really no way of telling what way it'll go - it just all depends on who applied and what points they got.

To answer your question, if there were loads of people on the same points and only 1 place left, it's just chosen by a random number generator on the CAO system.

    Good luck! :)

If you got that I'd say you'd be certain of a place. Courses with a high student intake such as BESS are often less susceptible to large point fluctuation.

I'm on a gap year, didn't want to do this course when I applied to the CAO last year but now it's appealing aaaaaaaand I'm five points short. Sucks :pac:

No-one knows what the points will be yet. You may have 10 points to spare or be 15 points short. Impossible to tell until August.
