i have posted this on a different forum but wondered what the general consensus was here. im going to give the cong river a go for trout and salmon this year and was wondering for the salmon (with the water been so clear) would you go small and bright or small and dull, or big?

    Les,

Most anglers on the Cong Canal wouldnt know what a fly was....

Think pike fishing... big spinners and deadbaits... not pretty!

Not normally known for its great salmon fishing either, mainly big (ferox) trout on their way to or from spawning and expect to see alot of them laid out on the local butchers shop slab on display in the window...

Not by any reach of the imagination to be on my favoured places to fish..

edit..... I have now seen that you were referring to the Cong river instead of the canal, my apologies, but I think I will leave this post up regardless as the two waterways are not too far apart.

Fished the cong river for salmon a few times in the past, lovely fishery at the castle. Fly choice depends upon water conditions/time of year. But various shrimp flies, lemon and grey, galway green, green highlander, cascade etc etc all weighted or unweighted, tubes in spring or higher water.
It can have a great grilse run in July. Although I thought there was some dispute with fishing access last season? It might be sorted now.

The cong canal and cong river are completely different things.

I'd agree completely with flyfishers fly choices, In particular the green highlander for this time of the year, it's usually extremely successful for me!
