I changed my cassette but there is a rattling noise from the back wheel.
Now everything is tight except cassette has a few bit of play in top cogs is this normal? Maybe it should be rock solid.
    Your help greatly appreciated

Do the spindles line up? Did you replace like with like? I.e 9 speed for 9 speed, 10 for 10? What about the spacer at the spoke side?

There should be absolutely no 'play' in it. As Pinch Flat has said, have you put in the spacer/spacers?

Mavic wheels? Spacer missing between top (biggest) cog & the end of the free hub body.

More details on cassette speed, hub type etc. My Shimano 10 speed cassette on Ultegra hub needs a spacer between largest cog and free hub, as do most others so I believe. Not so sure the SRAM needs one though.

It's ten speed 105 cassette on mavic wheels.
Thing is my dad changed it while I was In work and is 99% sure he fitted the spacer.
The top 4 cogs are wobbly to touch
Is the spacer visible if I look?

Has he put the rings on the correct way round? They have a 'front' and a 'back'. (The first 3 are fused together but the other 7 go on individually).

Could it be a simple case of it not being tight enough? I replaced my cassette for the first time before christmas and thought I had it quite tight, but still felt a bit of play in it. A few extra clicks tight and it was good to go.

There shouldn't be any relative movement between the individual cogs themselves.

I have found that the overall assembly sometimes has a little play on the freehub but there would be no noise associated with that. As others have suggested above, it does sound like a spacer has been missed or perhaps there's not enough torque in the locknut. Either way it's a quick enough job to pop it off and check.

Not to derail your thread but have a TCR myself and was considering changing the wheels - what did you change up to?

My new wheels came with a spacer and the new ultegra cassette cane with a thinner one. There's a chance your dad used the thinner spacer instead of the thicker one that came with the wheels.
