I am looking for a small runaround. Budget is €2-3k. I am looking at the car van versions of the Renault Megane and the Citroen C4. Both are around the 2005 vintage and both have a 1.5 and 1.6 diesel engine.

What are the pros and cons to each? Which would be better?

It might have been short, but is spot on.

    Pro’s = None whatsoever
Con’s = Both are 9 year old French cars, which will invariably break your heart.

I get all that. But it's not a principal car. It's a cheap ass runabout.

Don't mind the two little girls. There's plenty of old french cars goin round - not a bother ;)

And around and around from one sucker to the next.;)

Rule of thumb, stay away from old French cars, and women.

Why not spend the 3k on a Corolla or Focus? They wont't give you any problems and the Focus is better to drive then either of its French rivals.

    I don't want anything bigger than a 1.6 diesel.

If I was forced to pick one I'd probably take the Renault megane. But both can prove to be very unreliable. My dad bought a 2005 octavia 1.9tdi almost 2 years ago and has not caused any trouble whatsoever. Op I know you think you are saving money with the cheaper tax but trust me the extra tax cost will be very small compared to the cost of putting new injectors in the megane or a turbo in the c4 because they have failed. You could drop a grand on repairs in a heartbeat on either of them cars if something's goes wrong. Stick with the older more reliable diesels the 1.9tdi vag engine is hard to beat in terms of reliability.

One of our cars is a 05 Megane, serviced every year, I only do about 10k, in fairness its been reasonably good, no engine issues, replaced the battery & two front shocks after 8yrs

Had an issue with the boot not opening & airbag / service light on dash which was sorted for €50 & had window regulator problems on three windows which were sorted and haven't failed for 4/5 years now

You have a good chance of electrical issues especially the ones I mentioned, don't know anything about the other car

Cheap as chips cars. I just need something for a 130 mile daily roundtrip for a while. Don't want to spend much on this.

How long are you talking about. As you may be lucky and get a few months out of either without it causing trouble. But long term a 1.6hdi or 1.5dci engine that old on constant long trips will act up. Obviously a lot depends on how well the car was minded from new but chances are any megane or c4 2005 for 2-3k won't of had an easy life or be trouble free. Even if you had to go back several years a 1.9tdi octavia or similar would be a much better bet .
