Audi A4 136 tdie -low mpg 2010 ?

    Hi All,
I just bought a 2010 audi a4 136 tdie based on its low tax and great supposed mpgs. I do realise that what manufactures quote is always exaggerated somewhat as the test environment is artificial.
The quoted combined mpg for this car is 65 mpg (urban 74 and extra urban 55, something like that).
However I am getting nowhere near these figures.

I used to have a bora (2005) which could easily do 55-58 mpg on my 30 mile trip to work.

With the audi I am lucky to get between 40-44 and that'd driving like a nun. Although its states 65 combined I would be happy with 55. My trip to work is not motorway miles but a good steady run. Infact there does be so much traffic I rarely have an opportunity to do more than 60 miles an hour. There is also not that many hills. As mentioned the bora could do this no hassle, after about 10 miles driving.

Around the town the audi is only doing 27 to 32 mpgs. I am very disapointed as this is nowhere near the quoted mpgs. A website called honestjohn which quotes real mpgs states that I should get an average of 55.

Is there anybody out there with this exact model (i.e. the supposed efficiency model) and if so what mpgs are they typically getting. Perhaps there is something wrong with the car (I am hoping) or perhaps this is audi exaggerating to the extreme !

Grateful for any responses. Beginning to regret getting ride of bora (the tax was killing me on it).

    Many Thanks
    S

How are you measuring your mpg, trip computer or actually calculating it by the brimming the tank method?

There is no point in comparing the mpg of your old Bora as it is a smaller, lighter car with a different engine. Diesels also give crappy mpg around town. Also do you have the climate control/air conditioning on while you are driving, both can use a good bit of fuel. There are lots of factors why you are not getting the mpg you expect.

Also spending thousands in upgrading a car to reduce a few hundred in tax will never work out as a saving.

Complete false economy. The money you spent upgrading from the Bora would have out fuel in the tank and tax on the window for many years.
Infact there does be so much traffic I rarely have an opportunity to do more than 60 miles an hour.

Diesels give the best economy at steady, sustained speeds e.g. Motorways. Stop / Start will crucify any MPG ratings. Not sure how HonestJohn does his MPG tests, but the UK has more motorway and 'sustained cruise' sections than we do. As has been said, try brim your tank, reset your trip and then drive until empty. Measure the quantity of fuel versus the mileage. If you really wanted to, make sure the car has been serviced recently and the tyre pressures are correct. Both can have a major difference on MPG.

But all in, sounds about right to me.

2010 Skoda superb estate 2.0 140 bhp, average is 44.5mpg over last 3k miles. Computer is saying 47mpg. Thats all conditions, city, commute, school / shop runs round the corner and long distance motorway with climate control (AC) on all the time. I'd say your figure is accurate.

Not everybody wants to drive around in an old car forever. I think the OP meant he chose the A4 compared to other 2010 cars when he decided to upgrade the Bora. Obviously nobody spends thousands upgrading their car and thinks they are saving money.

Yes, no doubt he expect A4 to use same amount of diesel as Bora, reasonable expectation imo :)

I moved up from a 97 tdi passat and the economy is around the same, 53l doing around 550 miles in the Skoda. Bigger tank in the Passat so 57l was getting to aroun 580 miles. Not a whole lot of difference between them.

I have the same model and purchased it last November. Is your car the stop and start 136 TDI? Mines an ex Uk model and to be honest it's doing similar mpg as you are quoting. With a full fill of diesel its doing close to 500 miles per tank. I don't drive it very often but it is mostly on the motorway.

I have a 2011 Passat and was consistently getting 50+ MPG for almost 3 years. Suddenly the MPG dropped to 40 for a couple of weeks. It turned out that one of my rear tyres pressure was below 20 and I had never noticed. Once I fixed it my MPG is back to what it was. I never knew tyre pressure was such a variable in MPG.

it is a long shot, but are you converting to the right MPG unit? There is the US unit and Imperial unit. Probably best to talk about it in l/100km for consistency.

I have A4 09 2.0 TDI and my average since July 2012 is about 5.91l/100km. Mixture two long distance travel (80 miles) and city driving. For long distance I tend to go between 100-120 km/h. I'd say if I go slower, I'd get a bit better, the best I got so far from an individual top up reading is 5.28l/100km.

Not quite same model, 08 a4 tdi 143ps, but 60 mile daily commute, mainly national roads at 60-70mph, with 5 minutes urban each way, I get just under 42mpg, based on using FuelLog App for 5 months and almost 8000 miles.
    Disappointed too!

sorry i forgot to mention that the mpgs are not only based on the computer figure but also on calculating the actual miles we get out of €50. The computer seems to be be accurate and reflect the actual mileage we are getting.

    thanks again

Sounds like you didn't fill it to the brim, which can bring in inaccuracy.. best to fill to the brim, reset the counter, drive till next time you need to fill, fill to the brim again and note the amount filled and distance traveled.

    Hi again,
strange I posted a response but it must have got lost :)

All I was saying really was that I didn't actually upgrade from the bora to save money, just fancied a newer car as the old bora had 177k on the clock and was beginning to give bother. Also for a family it wasn't very roomy, although the audi isn't massive inside either. My objective was to get something a little bigger, low tax and good mpg. From what i had read this model (supposedly efficiency model) ticked all these boxes.

Thanks for the suggestions on air conditioning and tyre pressure. I had checked these, thanks. It has also just been serviced (by the garage I bought it in). I only have it 1 month now.

Yes I will test filling to brim as you suggested. I normally just wack €50 each time.

I was hoping it might be some sort of fault, but sounds like it isnt.

Grateful of hear from anybody else who has this exact model. Mine is also a uk import version i.e. 136 se tdi "e"

    Thanks again

I'm driving a 2008 A4 2.0TDi mostly motorway driving, I only have it a few months and until a few weeks ago I was getting about 48mpg. but since the full service and new wheel bearings I'm now getting closer to 60mpg, they can return great fuel economy if driven properly and well maintained. I also have over inflated tyres, rarely have the car under heavy load and try to have an average speed of 100kmh, Seems to be working for me.

No disrespect mate but this in a nutshell shows how people are hoodwinked into thinking spending thousands (always on a diesel) to save hundreds is a good idea.

Anyway, make sure you calculate your MPG properly rather than relying on the Trip Com. It does sound a bit slow for the TDIe.

And exactly how many litres do you get for €50? Is it the same each and every time?
