Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I have a niece turning 18 this year and I'm trying to think of a few gimmicky things to give to her as a reminder what things were like "back then"
Thing is I wasn't ultra cool meself at the time and am finding it hard to remember what was "in".

So far Im thinking those gel shoes( ok they weren't ultra cool .. But pretty funny) , the bracelets with glitter in them, maybe a soother necklace (although I think they were over and done with by then? )

Any ideas good folks of the net? Memories of 1996?

If I was any good I would've saved these things at the time!!

The best song in '96 for me was The Fugees,Killing me softly.
Other than than, nothing really stands out for me personally,as I was otherwise busy that year.

Buy her a copy of Reeling in the Years, the 90s-The Spice Girls were popular*,like One Direction now -own chocolate bars, calendars etc...search eBay for memorabilia, maybe?
Perhaps google it and go from there.

*popular does not necessarily equal good.

Because of the Spice Girls I'm thinking 1996 was all about platform shoes and a mysterious rise in broken ankles being treated in hospitals.

I'm thinking Trainspotting but a film about heroin addiction might not be the most suitable choice though you couldent escape it that year. The poster,The "Choose life " catchphrase the soundtrack etc.

The compilation is a good idea. The Now albums for that year were 33 and 34 I think.
(I got 32 for my bday at the very start of the year :pac: )

    They probably would !! Haha!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far, keep em coming , I'm googling and ebaying like mad but her birthdays not til the end of the year so plenty of time.

The music is a good idea I was absolutely sure a particular song was number one the day she was born but when I looked up the chart it was a different one... Damn my misty memory :pac:

I never had any of the cool Pogs, just crappy cheap ones. It was a strange craze all the same. Try explaining Pogs to the youth of today and they look at you with that wtf dopey stare of theirs...

Some of us are too old to have had any interest in pogs. I was too busy partying and getting laid back then* :p

So she is now old enough to use the internet - you could get her a brand new transportable i386 with Windows 95 on it and Internet Explorer 3 preinstalled and of course the usual AOL starter disk.
She'll need some instructions so get this on VHS or this

You'll need a 28.8kb modem to go with that, and a dot matrix printer.

If money is no object you could also source one of those new wireless mobile telephones, they were bricks about the same size as todays models with similar battery life (remember 2007) slightly better reception but they didn't get you mugged.

The Corrs and alanis morrisete were big in that year, Michelle Smith won a load of medals in the Olympics in USA, Eimear Quinn won the Eurovision for Ireland in that beautiful dress, the 2nd series of Fr Ted was aired in 1996, the Eurovision episode was huge-u should make a montage set to 'my lovely horse'

Father Ted was on my mind alright but the thing about it is it hasn't really gone away since ... That's amazing isn't it , for something with only 3 seasons it's still on TV 18 years later!
Had the Corrs and Jagged Little Pill album if I can find them I could give them to her and be like "this is a taaaape " (coz again I was not cool enough to have CDs)
    Good shout :)

Really like the idea of 1996 car ... Unlikely I could swing it but oh if I could ...

Possibly the song of the summer back in 1996 for GAA and of course Wexford fans

1996 was the year Big Jack retired from the Ireland team as well.

The Now albums for 1996 were 33, 34 and 35.

All are quite easy to pick up cheaply on CD.

Now 35 was the last one to be released on vinyl. Expect to pay €100.

There's also the Now Millennium Series 1996 which was released in 1999 [along with 19 others 1980 - 1999].
However these are pricey now and you'll pay at least 25 euro for it.

The Hits Series was still going then and is a cheaper alternative. Try Huge Hits 1996 which can be found on Amazon Marketplace for pence. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Huge-Hits-96-Various/dp/B000005REA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1393632206&sr=8-1&keywords=HUGE+HITS+1996

Those are all a fair few years earlier - well, maybe not the bracelets but definitely the other two.

Buy her a 6 pack of Mad dog 20/20 or Hooch. I think WKD launched that year too.

I know the soothers were done and dusted but maybe I'll throw one in for the crack , I dunno, the bracelets I'm including because I remember buying a heap of them the day she was born ... But like I said before I was a loser lol so maybe I was the only one wearing them then :D
Surprised about the jelly shoes I thought they were later but again L for loser over here :) although I can't imagine they were ever cool !!!
