Updo ideas for boring work uniform

I've started working in a place where hair has to be up and I'm really struggling with it so just end up throwing it in a boring ponytail or bun. Are uniform is absolutely atrocious yet it's the only place where we get to look pretty or in any way different. Any tips gals??

I keep on seeing girls with totally glam hair thrown up with no mess or frizz, just smooth waves etc. Agh!! I don't have mess or frizz when I wear it down

Like the second picture more than the first as it's a bit less severe for my giant face! If only I knew how to do proper plaits!

I used to use the hair donut for work sometimes but would have it much softer than the first pic. It wouldn't be as slick around the edges, and then I'd put in a little bow or small flower clip for some colour.
I'm rubbish at plaits too, so would do a twist of hair on each side, going into a low bun, kind of a retro look.
