horse dung on roads

Not sure if this is right forum, maybe mods will move it

I live near a riding stables and their season starts on the first of March

The amount of horse dung on roads they use about 1 month after they start becomes, what can only be described as a health hazard, huge mounds of dung lining the middle of the road from where they start to where they finish

People have asked the owner to clean it up every so often, it wouldn't take that long to throw it into a trailer but he just becomes abusive to anyone mentioning it to him

So my question is, is their any law/by law that says he has to clean it up? people who used to walk these roads no longer do so because of this.

Surely the people running the stables have a duty to keep the roads clean when the dung starts to pile up.

They have a duty long before it piles up. Any accident related to it is their baby.

So cows going from the field to be milked should be wearing nappies too? Why stop there, maybe colonic irrigation for all birds before they fly???

Like the poster above told ya, if the by-products of your cows can be proved to contridute towards an accident, you will be in the Sh1t.

I'm sure you understand the difficulty of proving ownership of a wild bird vs ownership of cattle? Maybe not though.

That's ridiculous post, first of cows going to be milked don't do a continuous circle of the same road up to ten times a day and also a cows dung doesn't really pile up, its much more fluid than horses dung, as for the birds, your away with them

    talk to council

Sorry, meant to mention that, 1 of the residents on the road has repeatedly tried to raise the issue with the council but has so far been unsuccessful

Are ya cycling or drivin ?? If they ****e in the middle of the road keep to the left. .
It woild not bother me to b honest.
Are you on the road a lot or is it the owners attitude that annoys you more than the ****e itself ?

No it's not if a farmer dirties the road and it is found to contribute to an accident it doesn't matter how much was there. It doesn't matter if it was cow dung from walking cows for milking or a foot of horse dung. The poster is still correct in that the principle is the same and the oowner of the animals is responsible.

Edit: sorry I reread the post you quoted and it is ridiculous but the farmer is still responsible for the dung and any accident it may cause.

It's a quite rural road, plenty people walking and cycling, it wouldn't bother me so much either, but as it's in the middle of the road it doesn't get dispersed by traffic, it starts to pile up and by the end of the summer the stench and the flies become fairly overpowering, his attitude leaves a lot to be desired but as he is a business man he's not doing himself any favours, the least he could do is clean it up every couple of weeks

    Just another arrogant fella .
I supose when they all sauntering along the same stretch a good few times a day it can look bad then .
Obviously the owner does not care

I know that a lot of farmers and ag contractors (and builders) have become a lot more concerned about muck and dirt being dragged onto public roads..
As they are responsible for the road conditions... Get back on to local council ,

Actually dung is dried and used as fuel for cooking in many 3rd world countries :)

Contact your local county council environmental health officer as you feel it is a public health issue for people including children using the road.

I wouldn't mind if it were the odd isolated splatter like people moving cattle very occassionally from one area to another or drawing slurry, but this guy wants taking down a peg or two.

I'm native to the area, this will be their 4th year in business and I get the feeling from talking to different people on his trekking route that they have enough of it

Scoop it up yourself into a trailer, and leave it on his doorstep.

Ah sure wait until a motorcycle comes along and hits a patch, comes off and sues the person responsible.

Won't be long cleaning it up then.

To be honest the way I see it is if somebody is bringing business and employment and tourism to the area they need to be supported. At ten treks a day, as you say, that is a lot of people, I'm sure the local restaurants, shops and pubs must be benefiting if this is the case. Is it really as bad as you say or are you making a mountain out of a pile of horse crap? Also the likes of trekking centres and equestrian centres are a great place for young kids growing up to be kept busy and out of trouble instead of hanging around towns and sitting at home playing computer games.

And most importantly is to set a good example for young kids and teach them that responsible animal ownership often involves cleaning up after them.

I don't suppose little Johnny would like to think he was in some way responsible were an accident to take place.

I fully agree with you, where in any of my posts did you read that I didn't want them to be in business, the more the merrier is what I say, it's good for community and kids, the main problem people have is the amount of horse dung on the roads, myself included as I have to walk and drive them every day, is it a big ask to expect him to clean up after his horses, would any other business get away with throwing the waste from their business on the road
