Is it possible to do it myself or do I need to bring it to a specialist store?

I bought it from my sister but she is not the original owner.

I am trying to get it to work on Meteor

    Cheers

If it is out of contract you can request an unlocking code from three. It comes with instructions on the procedure.

No you can't, not for 3Ireland, and they are not codes, iphones are unlocked using carrier updates which come through iTunes. There are sellers on ebay who can request these updates but only for vodafone and o2.
download software and do it yourself
    What software's that?
ask some one on three customer to get the code

The phones IMEI needs to be registered against the persons number who is requesting the unlock. So the person will need to register the phone against their account and 3 can be very funny about doing this from what I've heard. again its not a code either.

Try out the unlocking form on threes website. I got my iphone 5 unlocked no problem and I'm not the original owner.

Just fill that out. I put the reason for the unlock was to use it abroad, as I'm leaving the country soon. A few months back they rejected my request for my iphone 4 but recently it worked for my iphone 5.

you can do it yourself through itunes with the backup/restore function when you connect it to itunes

You can restore all day long and the phone will stay locked until the network or another company request the unlock.
