Selling Record Collection!

Seriously considering this at the moment, maybe not everything but a large % of it anyway - could do with the cash and I genuinely wonder when I'm ever likely to be stood behind a set of decks again bangin' out some acid techno :pac: They are most likely going to gather dust as I journey further into middle age.

Now for the next problem - time, which is something I have feck all of these days... I definitely don't have time to try get the most $$$ for each record on discogs etc so reckon the way for me would be a job lot off to somewhere - so the question is, anyone done this and if so where to? I know I'll get feck all probably but what can you do... I was thinking maybe somewhere like that place in the Georges St arcade?

With a heavy heart that I consider this but money constraints etc and I see this as being a temporary fix, albeit one that has me shed a tear or two! :(

How much would you be looking for the lot? I've a friend who collects those sort of vinyls..

I don't know yet... I have to go through the lot and see how much is there in total, plus take out a few that have sentimental value to me! I hope to get through them over the coming weekend and see how many there are etc.

As in you actually don't want to do it?

Not really Baz but I need to get cash pretty quickly and this is one way. I've not played them for over a year (about the same time I started the business) and really can't see me finding time for the foreseeable future either... I would prefer not to but the flip side is that it might generate some of the cash I need relatively urgently!

**** buzz. You might get a better price for some of them at something like this http://www.thesugarclub.com/listings/event/one-box-record-fair

It's weird, I was kinda considering the same thing recently. I wouldn't sell everything but there's a lot of stuff I know I'll never play again so I wouldn't mind downsizing the collection a bit.

I moved house 3 times in the last couple of years and moving all the vinyl that many times was a real headwreck and it got me thinking if I actually need them. I'm in the current house since last August and all my music stuff, vinyl, equipment, etc. is sitting there unused in the spare bedroom (junk room). I really need to de-clutter!

Started back in college last year along with a new baby so time is limited but I'd still find it hard to get rid of everything.

As for you selling your collection, I'd say you'd get absolutely scalped if you sold it all in one job lot. You've said that Discogs isn't an option, so as ianuss has suggested, maybe a record fair would be the best route?

Yeah a fair is probably the best/quickest way to get a bit back alright... I know the job lot route would be painful, even thinking about that versus all the years collecting etc gives me a pain in the gut! It's a tough one to consider...

Francois is right and you'd probably only make about €500 max

    +1

Jesus no listen to the lads, you'll be raped on a joblot

Flog your hardware even, at secondhand prices sold now and rebought
later on it'll hardly cost ya anything to free up some cash.

What I do anytime I'm trimming stuff down is filter stuff I definitely don't mind getting rid of into a few crates of "for sale" stuff, then just let people call around and pick through them, and gradually drop the prices as more people have picked through what's there.

Sell your records at 7 / 6 euro a pop for the first few buyers, then 4/5 euro a pop. Anything more valuable than a tenner doesn't make it into the crate to begin with. Takes a while but you're getting more money that Spindizzy or a job-lot sale would get you that way; the bare minimum you charge for a record should be about 4 quid since that's what any second hand shop will be selling them for.

The absolute dregs you can then just drop down to a shop; you'll get a euro for each one. You'll cry. The pricey stuff you just list on Discogs.

If it's Acid Techno you're selling I have a mate who's a fiend for that stuff and will happily take armloads of it off your hands btw.

I take it the business is going slow?

    Dont do it!

I know its always an option when things are tight, but i have had a few months actually counting out the 5c pieces at the end, cannot part with the music collection, i still add to it.

I gave away 5 or 6 records about a year ago with two albums as i thought i would never really be into playing them again, kicking myself now i did.

The way i see it for what its worth, when money is hard to come by you will look for something in your possession you value to sell to ease the difficult time your in.

The money you get for the items you sold is no sooner in your hand then out again.

The financial hardship returns a few weeks later & your down your prized possessions & no cash to show for it.

I would urge you not to sell them off but your the man to make the decision, a lot of vinyl goes up on adverts for sale at good prices per record,

Whether the asking is ever gotten for some i dont know.

Leaner times being only just over a year into business but moving at a pace I'm happy enough with!

Looks like I won't sell them now. I was trying to raise cash for something but it's fallen short elsewhere now so selling the records would really be of no benefit at this stage...

Thanks for the comments and thoughts all, unfortunate I can't do what I was planning but I am pleased my records can remain where they are!

I often think about this too but like you say time...

I've lots that I would gladly get rid off but lots more I would not like to see go.

Glad you've decided to keep them for now anyway :)

Yeah I'd say at some point there will be a cull, so many that I'm never likely to play again.

Hope all is well, many years since we last met - hopping around a kitchen with decks on the table if memory serves me, that must be about 9 years now!

On the other hand, if you're not going to play them again it would be nice to think that someone else might?

A wise man once said that record collections are like rose bushes - the award winning ones are always kept perfectly trimmed.

No me neither, the last time I was even in a club was Derrick May in the Twisted Pepper which was about September 2012!!!

Yeah all well here also with many life changes, defo catch up.

i would have no problem selling my 'normal' vinyl collection, its my collection of classics that i built up over the eyars trawling through record stores and htfr.com that i will take to the grave!!

    + 1,000,000

I considered doing it about 6 years ago, when I hadn't played vinyl for a long time, nor owed a set of decks (just cdj's)

Got the Vinyl bug again after watching a prosumer set on youtube, got a set of 1210's and now have over 1,000 records to play around with, which are just irreplaceable memories.

I can even remember some of the days when I bought a particular record, or played it out on my (pirate) show back in the day.

That's your life, they're your memories, and in 30 years these things will bring a smile to your face even touching them.

Whatever they're worth to someone, they're worth more to you in the long term. Don't do it.

I've the occasional blowout, but I think I may be facing my last one. Trip to Awakenings Easter weekend for Secret Cinema and a few others... I may catch up with you sometime at the end of May if you're free :)

Yeah, I haven't played many of mine in a few years but as I get older the memories they hold become more important. Sure you can listen to most of them on youtube now, but the pleasure I got from discovering something new in the record shop or that brown envelope arriving with the postman can never be equaled.

I was doing some work on my parents attic recently and came across my first records bought for my 12th birthday by my Dad - Welcome to the Pleasure Dome, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and A Secret Wish by Propaganda - both produced by Trevor Horn who was at the forefront of revolutionising popular music with studio and synth technology. It was from them my interest in electronic music ( and jazz to actually, courtesy of an uncredited guitar solo on ' The Murder of Love ' ) developed and bringing them back home to place alongside my collection of house was incredibly satisfying. In a sense, a whole bunch of music that came, literally and figuratively, from those two faded, worn albums.

I feel proud to have participated in the culture of that era, the miniscule contribution that it was, that few people understood at the time and even less so now I guess. Especially when we see this era of free music has indirectly spawned the X Factor & EDM monsters, those records represent something much, much better. Trim them down, make some space..but hang on to them :)
