Heads up for this on Thursday Night- Pioneers and Aviators-A history of irish aviation
Part one of two. The story of the people whose vision and passion helped to forge the country's aviation industry. The programme begins by charting the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Newfoundland to Co Galway by John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown, and because of Ireland's position in Europe, it became a gateway to the Americas. The documentary also looks at the birth of Aer Lingus, and how the danger of air travel became more evident in the crashes of the 1960s.
