Hi, I'm starting this thread as I didn't want to hijack the recent iMac SSD thread.

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15" with 320GB HDD and I'd like to speed it up. I use a lot of Photoshop, AfterEffects and FinalCut Pro especially. It is also used for general web browsing and films.

At the moment it has 2x2gb of RAM. For the speed increase I'm looking for am I better off to upgrade the RAM to 2x4gb or invest in an SSD. I've looked around for prices and 500GB SSD is out of my price range. Is the next size down a 240GB? I could probably get away with that by using a external HD for bigger files.

    Any opinions would be great.
    Cheers.

There are SSDs out there with a 400GB capacity; perhaps one of them will be a bit cheaper than 400GB plus it will give you the cash for the RAM upgrade.

Check your model compatibility here and see if it can take 2x8GB of RAM. That should definitely improve performance.

I've found a 480GB SSD for €253 here but the installation would be an extra cost assuming I can find a shop that will install an SSD that they didn't make money from. The next closest I could see is 240GB here. I think I could make do with it once I don't have a lot of crap and clutter on it. I'm not totally against installing it myself but I'd prefer not to.

Yeah I've checked it out and 2x4GB is the max it will take.

Where is the best place to get it installed if I was to buy the SSD myself?

    Cheers for the replies.

If you're any way confident you can buy a MacBook Pro Toolkit on ifixit or ebay and do it yourself. There are plenty of tutorials to guide you through the installation.
