Au Pair Job

I am writing this on behalf a friend from Asia living in Ireland who was looking for work as an au pair. He replied to an ad on gumtree from a woman who says that she and her family (currently living in Germany but from Greece) will be moving to Dublin and need an au pair.

The terms of the au pair work are:

€400 per week, live-out, mornings only (this seems too good to be true - I think au pairs get pocket money which is a lot less than €400)

The family also want a home very close to where my friend lives so he can spend more time with the children.

The family also said that they would send him a cheque for €2,500 which he should cash to pay for a deposit for an apartment.

So, obviously I immediately saw this as very suspicious and fishy. €400 per week seems ridiculously high for an au pair and the idea that we would find an apartment for them and pay the deposit seems crazy.

I told my friend all of this, warned him, etc and left it at that.

Since then, he has actually received a cheque (he must have given them his address) for €2,500. The cheque is from National Irish Bank and although it was not issued in the name of the family, it was issued in the name of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation. It looks fairly legit but the whole thing seems very bizarre.

    Would appreciate any comments.

First of all there is no live out aupair in Ireland; secondly the cheque may be real (but stolen) but either way it's 110% complete BS and a scam. Your friend will be asked to buy something/send some cash back etc. and when it bounces he'll be held to pay for it.

Recommend him to go to the police and make a statement of potential fraud and take it from there.
