    Hi Folks,

I'm facing what I can only imagine is a modern dilemma.

I'm in full time work (with poor wages).

We cannot afford to pay child care for our two kids (Wife is about to finish maternity leave in a few weeks).

If I leave my job (of my own accord) to mind our two Kids, will I receive any social welfare. If so how much?

I have been working continuously for 10 years.

(Jaysus they don't make it easy for you when you try to get your life together )

    Thanks in advance Folks.

    b

I think she'll get your tax credits. You'll still get your childrens allowance. Won't get job seekers etc, as you won't be looking for work.

If you leave your job voluntarily, you cannot claim any Welfare payments for 9 weeks. As you have a PRSI record you can claim Unemployment Benefit. Whether you actually get it depends on Welfare. They may question your ability to be available for work. Loads of info on www.welfare.ie & www.citizensinformation.ie.

I'm guessing your wife's pay packet is better than yours if your the one giving up work.
    She might get FIS.
The other thing is if you were finding life very stress full at the moment because of the financial/childcare situation then you might be suffering from stress, mightnt you?, and your GP might think that you were unfit for work for a while and you can at least get €188 Illness Benefit for a while without having to actually give up work.
Do you know what I mean?

Thats the kind of advice that gives welfare a bad name!

A fraudulent sick benefits claim perhaps.

Any claim would be means tested n your wife's salary, in Australia there isa childcare rebate where the government refunds you half the cost of childcare, we need this in Ireland so as people can work or even more community creches,

There are many people unemployed but cannot take up employment because of the simple fact of the childcare costs.

So when the media bangs on about the live register they have no clue that it's not just a job shortage, it's many factors and I know childcare is one of them.
