Buying new car-problems

    Well lads,
I am hoping to buy a new(2nd hand) car, was looking to spend 7k and I've a 04 Passat Dsl in fair condition to trade! I was all set to pick up either a 1.6 08 Dsl focus or a 08 Mondeo Dsl, have my eye on a few both private sales and dealership.

Trouble is got talking to my uncle, he is a mechanic and hes told me to steer clear of both of these and go for an Audi or VW(unfortunately for the year, 08 or better for tax, and mileage id like, 120k or less, I simply don't have that type of cash to spend)

He's a good mechanic so id value his opinion but now I don't know what to do I'm pretty much at my limit for 7k and looking at the likes of donedeal, id be doing well to get 2-2.5k(cash, trade in obviously less) for my own car......

    Suggestions?

The way I see it you have two options here:

    1. Sell the Passat privately and put the proceeds towards what you already have to spend allowing you a better budget.

    2. Keep your current car a bit longer and save a bit more money to increase your budget.

Also have you looked at the Skoda Octavia, it's basically a cheaper Golf with a bit more space or consider dropping back a year as cheap to tax cars cost more to buy.

Cheers for the input/info lads, not really sure what to do yet but couple of options to consider now.... like the octavia hadnt considered that at all!

I went from a focus to an Audi A5, and while the Audi is obviously more comfortable and better to drive, I miss the reliability of the focus, I've had loads of small problems with the Audi, I spent more on it in the first few months than I did in 8 years on my 2 focus's. I'd have no issue with going back to Ford, and I know a lot people with focus's who never have trouble, so I wouldn't rule out the Focus.

PS. All the focus's I have experience with were petrol

Get an octavia or something similar with a vag 1.6tdi engine. You will be a 100 times better off. And I have a focus with that one 1.6tdci and my parents have two Octavia's so I have experience with them all. I wouldn't touch another 1.6tdci focus or even a focus in general as even the 1.8tdci engine had its problems. That 1.6tdi vag engines is one of the best Diesel engines on sale at the moment IMO.

FWIW, most mechanics have what I would call pretty sh1t taste in cars. Present company excepted, of course.

you should have no problem getting a 08 mondeo for 7k really more like 6k.
like anything its preference if you like the focus or mondeo buy one dont buy something you dont like.
cant really say anything that would put me off a ford.
keep in mind vw and audi wont be as cheap to fix and

Whyexactly did your Uncle say to avoid the focus and mondeo?

Whyexactly did your Uncle say to avoid the focus and mondeo?

He said the tdci was not as good an engine as the tdi engine on the audis/Vws, and that he had seen alot of problems with the cars in general

Ahh fair enough both engines give problems, but I've yet to see many complain alot about the tdci engine. There is a thread somewhere here on them, that said. I'm sure my username gave it away, but I have an 08 mondeo myself, hasn't given any trouble for me in the past 20 months, apart from changing the timing belt at 100k.

Not sure , haven't the vw engines also been notorious for problems? Especially that 2.0 l one they had from about 06.
Audis are also notorious for expensive niggles. I'd much prefer be replacing something on a ford vs audi or vw!

    Would you consider something Japanese?

as long as its diesel, yea i would!!

An accord diesel might float your boat. I am told some mazda diesels are sh1te. Toyota diesels arent rubbish but wont set your heart on fire.

its ot so much "what floats my boat" as "what can i afford-which of those float my boat!!"

Unfortunately the accord tends to be a bit more than the avensis. It is however a lot nicer.

A diesel avensis with less than 100k miles wouldnt be a bad buy.
