Well, I will be in Rome next weekend, and I was wondering if anyone knew what would be the best pub to watch the Ireland Vs England game. Preferable an Irish pub. Bur anywhere that would have a good atmosphere for the game...

    Thanks

I generally end up at the Abbey Theatre. Good spot, not too big, great staff.

I was in the Scholars Lounge last June. Think they have about 15 TVs. When I was in there they had GAA, NRL, Confed Cup, SSN and American sports all on at the same time. That's your best bet.

    Finnegans will definitely have it.

They had TG4 a few years ago to watch a Rabo game!

Finnegan's was my local when I lived in Rome. It usually had a great atmosphere during the matches, though it is a bit smaller than Scholars and the Abbey Theatre.

There was a Scottish dude who always wore a kilt and came around for the Scotland matches. He put banners up for Sean Maitland, claiming he was his cousin and generally egging him on. To this day I don't know if he was taking the piss because of Maitland's questionable Scottish identity, or whether he really was related to him. I never questioned him at the time though, given he used to be quite generous with rounds for those in the pub!

I always make a trip to Finnegans whenever I'm in Rome; was there after the match last year aswell. It's actually one of my favourite Irish pubs outside of Ireland, in that it actually really feels like a small Irish country pub; no neon or tack. My mate came to visit me during a horrific period of rain, and we sat in Finnegans, rain smashing off the windows, watching Leinster play on TG4 - I never felt more at home!

Scholars isn't too bad but I always found it to be a bit Coppersy for my liking. Not unlike other Irish pubs throughout the world it also seemed to attract a lot of tourists from a certain country who feel compelled to overdo it on alcohol consumption and obnoxiousness whenever they are in Irish pubs.

    Never been to the Abbey.

I'm guessing you're talking about the Irish right?

Finnegans and Fiddlers Elbow seem to be the ones that keep coming up, So think I will try one of those. Thanks for the suggestions.

It's an odd place, Irish flag and the St George's cross flag side by side, no Irish staff, meh.

Cool - don't really remember too much about the place. Because it was a while ago, of course.

The problem I have with Irish bars in Rome (or any major city in continental Europe) is that they're extremely touristy, comparable to the plastic paddy type bars in Temple Bar, focus on the diddley eye rather than actually being a bar for ex pats to congregate, unlike Irish bars in London and NYC.

If there isn't a large contingent of Irish ex-pats in a particular city, Irish bars tend to be themed restaurant bars without much connection, less interest, in any current Irish sporting events etc., which is fine and makes sense from a tourist / business point of view, but still makes them pretty lame destinations for sporting events in particular.

It's not really an Irish pub (no Irish people working there as far as I know) and it's in a bit of a random place (near the main train station). I wouldn't even be certain it will show rugby (although I have vague memory of seeing Leinster there one day so might be wrong).

Abbey or Scholars are your best bet (Scholars will have far more Americans) I would think.

Fiddler's Elbow your best bet, not touristy and oldest irish pub in italy if i can recall correctly.

I'd agree, not overly welcoming, another vote for Finnegans here!

Ended up watching the match in Scholars. Did the job for what I was looking for, plenty of TV's showing the match, english speaking commentary, and was also showing the premiership matches. Good mix of Scots, Italians, and Irish, so the atmosphere was pretty good. Probably better stops in Rome to go drinking, but to watch a game I would say this is the best spot.
